Armenia said on Wednesday it would host a joint military exercise with the United States next week, a development that Russia said was cause for concern.

The Armenian Defence Ministry said the purpose of the Sept. 11-20 "Eagle Partner 2023" exercise was to prepare its forces to take part in international peacekeeping missions.

A U.S. military spokesperson said 85 US soldiers and 175 Armenians would take part. He said the Americans - including members of the Kansas National Guard which has a 20-year-old training partnership with Armenia - would be armed with rifles and would not be using heavy weaponry.

The only.concern Russia should have is where all those missing Russians are that keep disappearing into Ukraine. Putin says they weren't killed. So, maybe they are just wandering around lost? Maybe finding the thousands of missing citizens should be Russia's first "concern" instead of worrying about what other countries are doing.

No one is planning to invade Russia, so Putin's idiotic concerns should fall only on deaf ears.

He already knows they're either dead or deserters

[-] Burn_The_Right@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago

Yes, he knows. But he won't admit it. So we can all play along and re-direct all of his concerns back to the most pressing matter for Russians which is "where in the world are they all mysteriously disappearing to?"

Ukraine might be. And I say good for them!

Crimea is theirs to reclaim. Places in Russia, used to stage or support the war of aggression against Ukraine are fair targets - even for occupation until a peace treaty.

I don't see Ukraine picking up new territory from this, which seems like a key distinction. Reclaim, yes. New, no.

[-] Buddahriffic@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

Yeah, that's most likely. Though if the Russian federation were to collapse during a period where some of their territory is occupied by Ukraine, I could see some of it going to them. Though IMO it should be by (legitimate) referendum where they decide their own fate.

Tankies should be treated like Nazis more often. Same level of brain deadness.

[-] InvertedParallax@lemm.ee -5 points 1 year ago

They mean well (in their crazy, stupid, fucked up way) but they actually have a much higher body count.

[-] bingbong@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 1 year ago

People denying genocide and promoting mass executions never "mean well"

[-] InvertedParallax@lemm.ee 1 points 1 year ago

Everybody "means well", hitler thought he was reviving the German people from their humiliation at Versailles and that any price was reasonable.

That and $2.50 will buy you a pack of gum.

The term tankie has been vulgarized, but it has a specific meaning. A tankie is an orthodox communist who puts the "dictatorship of proletariat" above any morality or any other interest, foreign or domestic. That's how a tankie brushes away any genocide, any crime, because no value or entity is too important to stand in the way of their communist utopia, even human rights. In this sense, this group is very close in practice to nazis, you just have to replace "proletariat" with "nation" and for that abstraction anything is allowed: internal repression, invading your neighbours and allies.

But not all "communists"/socialists are like that and many mean well (e.g. Gorbachev, some anarchists like Chomsky or "democratic-communist" Lula, etc), but a good few follow tankies unquestioningly without realising the underlying inhumanity dressed as theory.

Goddamn Russia nobody wants to mess with you. Stay in your own borders and take care of your own shit and you've got nothing to worry about.

[-] severien@lemmy.world 9 points 1 year ago

They were never worried about their own security. What NATO et al. are threatening is their ability to blackmail the neighbors.

[-] awwwyissss@lemm.ee 17 points 1 year ago

Armenia also sent their first aid to Ukraine recently. Maybe they've decided which horse to back.

[-] TransplantedSconie@lemm.ee 10 points 1 year ago

It's OK, Russia. You can stay on your base getting drunk while real soldiers train the Armenians.

[-] dogslayeggs@lemmy.world 8 points 1 year ago

Anything we can do to help Armenians defend themselves against Azerbaijan is OK with me.

Armenia and Georgia should become NATO members. It makes sense. With Greece, Bulgaria, Romania, Cyprus, Georgia and Armenia in NATO, Turkey won't be important for NATO anymore. If Turkey doesn't like it and try to do what they did with Sweden then dissolve NATO and make a "new" NATO without Turkey. No real loss, Turkey in NATO pushes Russia's agenda and is hostile to other NATO members.

This is the best summary I could come up with:

Sept 6 (Reuters) - Armenia said on Wednesday it would host a joint military exercise with the United States next week, a development that Russia said was cause for concern.

The Armenian Defence Ministry said the purpose of the Sept. 11-20 "Eagle Partner 2023" exercise was to prepare its forces to take part in international peacekeeping missions.

He said the Americans - including members of the Kansas National Guard which has a 20-year-old training partnership with Armenia - would be armed with rifles and would not be using heavy weaponry.

Russia has a military base in Armenia and sees itself as the pre-eminent power in the South Caucasus region, which until 1991 was part of the Soviet Union.

It maintains a peacekeeping force in the region to uphold an agreement that ended a war between Armenia and Azerbaijan in 2020, the second they have fought since the Soviet collapse.

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said in a weekend interview with an Italian newspaper that Russia had failed to protect Armenia against what he called continuing aggression from Azerbaijan.

The original article contains 295 words, the summary contains 178 words. Saved 40%. I'm a bot and I'm open source!

I feel bad for our Armenian brothers, they are in a terrible spot geographically speaking. A country with western values landlocked and surrounded by idiots.
