"Giving people more viable alternatives to driving means more people will choose not to drive, so there will be fewer cars on the road, reducing traffic for drivers."

Concise, easy to understand, and accurate. I have used it at least a dozen times and it is remarkable how well it works.

Also—

"A bus is about twice as long as a car so it only needs to have four to six passengers on board to be more efficient than two cars."

Booting is on the rise in New York City.

Drivers who don’t pay up for traffic tickets are more likely to have their cars ensnared than they have been at any point since before the pandemic all but shut down enforcement, according to city data.

New Yorkers' vehicles were immobilized 134,945 times in 2023. That’s more than quadruple the number of boots clamped onto wheels throughout the city in 2020, when only 31,379 vehicles were captured by the devices’ metal fangs.

Drivers who fail to pay $350 or more in parking or traffic camera tickets within 100 days of their issuance are subject to booting.

Many booted vehicles get towed away. If their owners don’t retrieve them, the city can sell them at auction.

Plans for a new city centre car park in Exeter have been criticised.

Proposals to turn the former bus station site into a car park are part of a public consultation which also involves increasing car park prices across the city.

The Green Party said the plans for a new car park were "ridiculous" and did not "make any financial sense".

The Labour leader of the council said he wants to increase the options available for the use of the site.

The council is considering creating a new Paris Street car park, external on part of the old bus station site which was demolished earlier this year.

Previous plans for offices and a multi-purpose performance venue on the site were scrapped in 2023.

Diana Moore, Exeter Green Party leader, said: "A new car park, right next to St Sidwell’s Point, a place which is meant to be a showcase for sustainability and health, and close to a dangerous roundabout and the new bus station, beggars belief."

Ms Moore said the plan showed a "breathtaking lack of imagination".

She said: "This decision also puts cutting carbon emissions, reducing congestion and improving air quality firmly into reverse gear.

"As existing city centre car parks are underutilised, this decision doesn't make any financial sense either."

The council is also looking at raising prices at car parks across the city centre.

The council's executive met on Tuesday to approve the plan for a six-week public consultation which should begin later in August.

Liberal Democrat group leader Michael Mitchell also raised concerns at the meeting about how the plans fitted alongside Exeter City Council's plans to become net zero on carbon emmissions by 2030.

Phil Bialyk, leader of the council, said he understood the concerns raised by opposition parties but said the council was trying to prepare for different scenarios.

He said: "All this will do is give us the ability to charge for whatever part of the old bus station site we might choose to use as a car park site.

"Having a parking order will increase our options on how we can use this space for the benefit of the people in Exeter."

Mr Bialyk said the council was working on new plans for the area which were expected to be made public in the autumn.

Hey everyone,

I'm just here to vent a bit, even though I know words won't change anything.

I'm from Saudi Arabia, where public transportation is almost nonexistent in most cities, including mine. I think Riyadh has some options, but overall, it's just not popular. So, like many others, I have to drive every day and fill up the gas tank weekly, if not more often. I absolutely hate wasting time driving.

When I say there's no public transportation, I mean it, no buses, no metro, nothing. There's a railway, but it only connects a few cities, not all.

Sure, Uber or taxis are available, but let's be honest, who can afford that for an entire month? Owning a car is much cheaper in the long run, especially for running errands for the family.

Driving stresses me out, especially at night with the bright headlights and fast speeds (most roads are 100 km/h, or about 62 mph). My daily commute to university takes an hour, and the traffic is terrible. I have to stay fully alert the whole time to avoid accidents, so by the time I arrive, I'm already exhausted, and of course there's no time to rest because classes start right away. I lose two hours every day just driving, time that I could be using to read, chat with friends, or even watch a movie if I were on public transportation.

I don't really have a solution to this problem, but does anyone else? It's becoming unbearable. Just to add, I don't have any close friends to carpool with. I once thought about sharing the driving with someone, but most of us have other commitments before and after college. In my case, I also have to drop my siblings off at school and pick them up later.
