Looking for a very specific genre of music and I am unsure of where to ask for suggestions.

i'm kind of surprised no one mention the old boi last.fm

edit - to be clear i understand its an all but dead platform but its always been there for me :') and their algorithm seems better than it should be.

last.fm was/is great! I used to use it extensively and it lead me to so much new music over the years...

[-] Zorque@kbin.social 6 points 10 months ago

Its all those scrobbles.

But I agree, last.fm was the last streaming music service I ever used regularly. Everything else just seems to have such shitty suggestions comparatively.

i'm happy i'm not crazy. i just regret not scrobbling for like 7 years :(

What specific genre? Maybe we can help right here.

[-] Buffaloaf@lemmy.world 12 points 10 months ago

Regardless of the genre, the answer is King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard.

[-] folkrav@lemmy.ca 6 points 10 months ago

I tried to like psychedelic rock, man. I really tried.

[-] H1jAcK@lemm.ee 3 points 10 months ago

You need to do more drugs. Or less drugs. Either way, the solution is drugs.

[-] folkrav@lemmy.ca 2 points 10 months ago

I don't disagree. Might be dependent on specific drugs/effects? :P

[-] dimeslime@lemmy.ca 2 points 10 months ago

There are better kings in pyscadelic rock. King Buffalo maybe? King Gizzard is not always easy listening.

It sounds ridiculous but I promise I’m being serious. I’m looking for instrumental songs that are from the middle ages / the renaissance, with fun and fast-paced beats that just makes you wanna dance to it. Think of the POTC soundtrack but medieval. An example is the song “Im Maien” by Piffaro. I’m writing a story at the moment that takes place during this time and I could really use some upbeat, party bangers as inspiration lmao.

Not exactly what you're looking for, but the Bardcore genre is the modern equivalent - pop songs retrofitted with medieval aesthetic.

Stuff like this: https://youtu.be/lB9LJJQ8wzw?si=Qw9af_W-IP7rrfZp https://youtu.be/cRIfsFefatg?si=y65PQnev4iGr-1I8 https://youtu.be/u3UVOjiorHE?si=7Pc94vX5Trt9-pKn

I have listened to that! While they’re funny, I can’t take them very seriously, especially when writing. :')

[-] Zoomboingding@lemmy.world 1 points 10 months ago

Yeah, I still consider it pop music first. Not sure how prolific actual historical works are, but fantasy/period soundtracks might have to suffice. Good luck!

Plugging !radiolemmy@lemm.ee. Not exactly what you asked for, but a cool community project that covers a wide spectrum of musical genres.

[-] Transcendant@lemmy.world 6 points 10 months ago

Might be a case of 'build it and they will come'.

I've been writing dance music for about 20 years, I think the relentless pigeonholing of genres can get ridiculous, but if it's within that cast array I might be able to help... Before someone else wildly disagrees :)

[-] flipthetube@lemmy.world 4 points 10 months ago

Wildly disagree.

You’ll have to pry my deep minimal organic afrotech from my cold dead hands.

[-] Transcendant@lemmy.world 6 points 10 months ago

One day, you'll realise it was deep minimal organic afrotech dubhouse, and come to your senses

[-] luthis@lemmy.nz 2 points 10 months ago

It can definitely get ridiculous, but it is unavoidable when you really start to develop a taste for music.

[-] otter@lemmy.ca 4 points 10 months ago

If the community for this doesn't have enough use to be sustainable, you could also ask in !nostupidquestions@lemmy.ca, !nostupidquestions@lemmy.world, or !tipofmytongue@lemmy.world

[-] panchzila@lemmy.world 3 points 10 months ago

What kind of music do you like? I love finding and sharing music.

[-] walden@sub.wetshaving.social 3 points 10 months ago

https://gnoosic.com might work. You tell it artists you like, and it gives recommendations. The recommendations are based on what other people have input as their "artists I like". So if someone says they like Bob Dylan and Mutemath, the next time someone says they like Bob Dylan, Gnoosic might recommend Mutemath.
