Not arguing against that. But guaranteeing the freedom of Taiwan is a good thing. And for that to be effective/credible you must have a military presence. Very little is black and white.

I'm with you until that last sentence. Letting China dominate the region for untold years is not a solution. I'm not saying the US or the "North Atlantians" are angles, no one is. But I strongly believe the correct choice of action is always going to be to maintain peace if at all possible. And currently it is by deterring China from taking Taiwan and growing their sphere of influence in violent ways.

Basically there's Kobo and Kindle where I'm at that are good. For me I like a bit more premium stuff in terms of having decent build quality etc and that means it's either Kindle Paperwhite or Kobo Libre 2 that fits me. Both have proprietary shit software and their own bookstore but both can be side loaded. I generally prefer buying tried and tested hardware even if there probably exist some niche fully open source device out there but they tend to cost a lot more due to lacking scale of production. I wouldn't however buy either of those new. I've setup reminders on second hand websites in my area and waiting till I find one in a good condition/price. Where I'm at that means for a almost unused device it should be about 10-20% below lowest historic price new. And older models around 50% below cost of a new model, naturally with a lot of variance depending on condition etc.

While I'm not particularly happy about the change it's not password sharing being banned that will eventually get me off Netflix. For now what keeps the sub going is their good and varied kids show selection with a lot of edutainment. Something I feel the others desperately lack. And any parent who has ever tried sailing the seas instead of paying knows how much of a pain in the ass it is to find good kids content and enough of it to guarantee you have something available when it's desperately needed to make the day work. Especially when your mother tongue isn't English. And YouTube is mind cancer for kids in my firm opinion; if you don't sit and watch with your kids which defeats the purpose of screens as a tool for when you need to cook, clean and work.

The people who shared our sub were mostly family that when we started sharing were students without the means to reasonably pay for it themselves but now they have jobs and some even kids so our family has gone from 1 sub to 3 that I know of.

They don't have many buses like that yet and buses are always near population centers where using food waste to make biogas is simply much better in almost every way.

As for storing excess energy sure if we're talking solar generation but they use a lot of hydrogen too for this project and in that case pumping water up to the dam is a much easier and probably more efficient than generating hydrogen and either using it to run an engine or store in fuel cells. Fuel cells aren't all that efficient. Overall a lot of money spent that will not at all pay for itself for that use case.

I really struggle with why they've gone so heavily into generating hydrogen when there is a big lack of viable use cases. Though they're far from alone in overestimating hydrogen, BMW and Toyota both invested heavily in fuel cell research (and BMW experimented with direct hydrogen use) and neither came out the other end a winner.

Or there is a middle ground where you'll actually get a nuanced take?

I'm mostly curious about what they're going to do with the hydrogen. Fuel cells? No hydrogen tech I know off has really proven scalable, reliable and cost effective. And while hydrogen generation was part of the issue it wasn't the biggest one. I'm also keen to understand if they use fresh water or salt water. The latter then there is potential for a energy neutral or positive even desalination process which would be massive for large swaths of Africa.
