In a perfect world, I'd agree - if law officials were to perfectly convict guilty people each time, and if execution methods were absolutely flawless with painless/instant death. However, that's not what happens in the real world.

There's an amazing video by Jacob Geller on execution methods, where he talks about the history and the present of death sentences, but in short, not an insignificant amount of people get falsely convicted and then executed, and the execution methods US are using focus more on "appearing humane" rather than effective/painless, and the incompetence of the executors turning some of those executions into hours of agonizing pain.

A few years ago I switched to Linux and I pretty much was like this: I saw a friend who didn't use Linux and tried to evangelize it, saying how it's superior, how everything you do on Windows is doable on Linux, how Microsoft harvests your data and how bloated Windows 10 is.

That didn't really lead me anywhere except pushing people away from Linux because I was practically forcing it onto them. Average experience would be me helping them install Linux and troubleshoot some things (usually via googling for them), but as soon as they hit some roadblock that required more extensive troubleshooting to fix (say, a rarer issue), they'd just quit, resulting in time wasted on both ends. If you don't want to drive people away from Linux and be their dedicated tech support for hours and hours (assuming it's a friend rather than a stranger on the internet), then please don't evangelize it without being asked specifically about it. It's okay to suggest, but let people decide if they want to make the switch themselves.

This isn't specifically targeted at OP or anyone in particular, it's just that this type of mentality seems to be literally everywhere when it comes to Linux corners in social media and this meme reminded me of it.

Humans can live without food for up to 2 months, so to save even more money, just eat food every 1 month and 29 days!

Not really an opinion but I guess an experience - Manjaro was my first ever Linux distro.

I switched to it around 4 years ago and everything seemed to work except that I had this issue where if a game was running for 30 minutes or longer, it would progressively run worse and worse until it either crashed or I would just restart it. Didn't really find any solution online, the issue didn't happen on windows so I just switched back after 2 weeks.

Half a year later I decided to give it another shot, but I had a completely different issue I couldn't figure out how to fix, so I switched away from it 3 days later to Mint. Switched back to Windows a day later because I wasn't much of a fan of apt when compared to pacman, and arch (what Manjaro is based on) is this mythical distro that's very hard to install and use, so I didn't bother.

Then another half a year later I switched to arch and stuck to it, with minor distro hopping here and there but always came back to arch. Thanks to Manjaro, I knew pacman commands and had overcome the fear of the terminal, which did make the switch to arch much easier.

That being said, my opinion is that you should at the very least try it. If the distro gives you no problems - fantastic, but if gives you major issues like in my case, then at least you get to familiarize yourself with arch-based distributions and maybe try EndeavourOS or Arch in the future.

Just to add to your comment, steamtinkerlaunch is a compatibility tool that allows you to install any mod manager through a GUI. Pretty handy.

I have played modded skyrim on my Linux system, and it worked fine. It was somewhat of a headache to make Vortex work, but once I figured out the quirks, it worked fine (used steamtinkerlaunch as compatibility tool). Civilization too - 5 (with and without EUI) and 6 worked pretty much out of the box via proton. A friend of mine plays RDR2 and also has no issues, doing coop stuff and singleplayer or whatever.

I'd say in terms of your choice of games, you should be fine. Proton runs most games just like windows nowadays, and you get the added benefit of less system load. There might be some games that require a bit of tinkering to get working flawlessly, but chances are some user on protondb has a solution.

If you need a distro, a rolling release one might be your best bet, as having up-to-date packages does help with gaming.

My personal journey was Arch > Void > Gentoo > Arch > Nix > Void again > realizing there's nothing really like Arch and going back for good. Hope this helps!

Questions like these make me wonder if large capitalists actually live in an alternate universe but through some time and space shenanigans they are still here. There's just no way they can make this type of shit up (assuming it's a real question) without being delusional or sadistic.

I don't use torrents all that much to be quite honest - I just download and forget about it with my qbittorrent running in the background pretty much 16 hours a day while I'm awake.

Think the highest seed ratio I accumulated doing this was 500 ratio on a 50gb file.

I was a reddit user for around 7 years, deleted my account once 1 year ago (due to becoming privacy conscious) and tried to minimize my use of it, with occasional relapses.

I was mostly using reddit via libreddit frontend as I would mostly lurk and rarely comment, and because of the loading speed of the website (no need to load and run tons of javascript code every time), but since the API changes I can probably only look at 1 subreddit and around 3 posts before reaching the rate limit. Needless to say, this killed my main way to interact with the platform and seeing that lemmy got a lot more people now, I made an account here yesterday.

Not yet, but the teasers and ARG's have dropped already. Probably a couple more months?

If you're looking for "games as art", I have 3 recommendations:

  1. Yume Nikki. It's a classic RPGMaker horror game, which has inspired many Fan Games and even some more modern games, such as Undertale. Definitely at least give it a try and explore a little bit - the game play is minimal but it's quite an atmospheric experience.

  2. Disco Elysium. It's more of a very interactive book than a game, but the writing is just phenomenal. In the game you have 24 skills as your personality traits, and depending which ones you level up, they often come and chime in during conversations, giving funny remarks or advice - I love it.

  3. Pathologic 2. Can't really get into its special mechanics without spoilers, but it's such a gem of a game. I love it.
