Money, Mods, and Mayhem

The Turning Point

In 2024, Reddit is a far cry from its scrappy startup roots. With over 430 million monthly active users and more than 100,000 active communities, it's a social media giant. But with great power comes great responsibility, and Reddit is learning this lesson the hard way.

The turning point came in June 2023 when Reddit announced changes to its API pricing. For the uninitiated, API stands for Application Programming Interface, and it's basically the secret sauce that allows third-party apps to interact with Reddit. The new pricing model threatened to kill off popular third-party apps like Apollo, whose developer Christian Selig didn't mince words: "Reddit's API changes are not just unfair, they're unsustainable for third-party apps."

Over 8,000 subreddits went dark in protest.

The blackout should have reminded Reddit’s overlords of a crucial fact: Reddit’s success was built on the backs of its users. The platform had cultivated a sense of ownership among its community, and now that community was biting back.

One moderator summed it up perfectly: “We’re the ones who keep this site running, and we’re being ignored.”

Nice movie references

Plenty of others too: vlemmy.net, iusearch.fyi, lemmy.film.

That's why people should pay attention to a few things when looking for a server

  • are there at least two admins?
  • are they communicating regularly, including on their finances
  • is there a Matrix chat or another way to reach out to them

If not, someone could just set up a rogue instance, create fake communities on it, then start pushing a million pictures per minute to every Lemmy instance, exhausting their resources

It is possible using lemmyverse.net, I added a comment below

An easier way is to use http://lemmyverse.net/communities

Set your home instance using the home icon on the right

Select only the target instance with the instance filter

Now you can see only the target instance communities, and clicking on them will open them on your home instance

You're right. I guess FFXIV players are too busy playing to be here too ha ha

Indeed, so that’s my point.

There were quite active BG3 and Helldivers 2 communities when they released as those are worldwide hits.

If you look at !helldivers2@lemmy.ca vs !finalfantasyxiv@lemmy.world, you instantly see which one is a more active game.

Mostly referring to the release of the latest WoW extension which isn't discussed anywhere (or maybe I missed it)

Discuit is one of the alternatives to Reddit which emerged at the same time as Lemmy (the other one being Tildes, mentioned at the end of the post)

Lemmy has 48k monthly active users (mau): https://lemmy.fediverse.observer/dailystats

Mbin has 862 mau: https://mbin.fediverse.observer/dailystats

Piefed has 133 mau: https://piefed.fediverse.observer/dailystats

On Tildes site, I counted around 25 posts per day: https://tildes.net/?order=new

We can see that federation was indeed a better solution, looking at the difference in number of Discuit and Tildes (not federated) vs Lemmy/Mbin/Piefed

I've seen a few comments in the other thread about community centrization

Your following, blocking, muting, and domain-blocking lists can be imported at Settings > Import, where they can either be merged or overwritten.

Mastodon currently does not support importing posts or media due to technical limitations

https://docs.joinmastodon.org/user/moving/#export

Seems pretty similar to the way we manage it with Lemmy at the moment (settings menu, export JSON, import JSON), am I missing something?

From this post (https://sopuli.xyz/post/15865566) on !AskMbin@fedia.io

It’s very likely related, but we also figured out that both of debounced’s (the admin of kbin.run) accounts on GitHub and Matrix were deleted last night. So there is a possibility that kbin.run is no more.
