Those are great, but somehow all the cans that i am buying now seem to come with their own "zip". Haven't used the opener in a good while.

Or maybe everybody should breathe through their pants, calm down a bit, share the road, that kinda stuff.

Thak you! I have been following the family dramas of three pigeon couples in my yard since winter and nobody to talk to about it, haha. I feel like my friends think i'm crazy.

Removing the nest was kinda yuck, some weird substances there. And so much pigeon shit. But the lil ones turned out amazing. Compared to the other young pigeons they seem to be in amazing shape. Photos from today:

the older one

I believe the older one is a male, i think it is doing warning calls when i get out on the balcony, but it sounds very un pigeon like, cute baby pigeon sound.

lil one

Haven't seen it in for two days, was already a bit worried. It slept quite a few more days on my balcony but no more. It has no problem eating out of my hand, brother is a bit more sceptical but does it too. Mom and pops are also daily guests, as is the "aunt" and the poor "uncle" who took care of the widow, which sadly must have passed away like two weeks ago. She was such a gentle and beautiful pigeon RIP. 🥲 Life goes on.

Pigeons all to be molting looking all scruffy.

Nice kinda rare shot of a feral pij sitting on a tree :)

[-] AchtungDrempels@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

Totally agree. But i don't know if there is any hope, so many fedi people seem to not want any normies (people not working with computers i guess) entering.

LW rules still allow them to namesquat that community

So i had another look. I think it's actually kinda crazy that you demand they should lock the dataisbeautiful community. The world one has a bunch of different users posting stuff to it, in the mander one it is 50% you. The mods are all active lemmy users, max three months since last comment (and we don't know when they last logged in to lemmy). You just claim it is an unmanaged community, but it looks just fine to me, no spam or whatever. And i don't agree at all that mods necessarily need to be actively posting into the communities they mod.

Quoting the quote where you mentioned me in that other topic

You can easily pick the “wrong” community on a topic, and see zero content when there’s another one full of posts but…

This does not apply to the world community, but i guess to the ones other than mander, ml and world:

The ml community is also not locked btw.

And i don't see how this could be fixed in the lemmyverse, having multiple communities for same topic? It is just part of how this works? It is also kinda easy to tell by these search results which communities might be active. And if you're interested in the topic, you'd subscribe to all of them (active ones). That's how it was a year ago too, when i looked for communities of my interest.

Honestly i understand you less after looking into it more. I mean i get the desire to spread out communities and i think it would be a good thing, but you can't just force your will onto other people and their ideas like that.

LW is so large than they have to be extra cautious with their updates. If they would be 20% of the total Lemmy population, and 30 of the top 100 communities compared to now, they would probably be more at ease with “me can mess up a bit, it’s okay”. Having them as a cornerstone of the whole platform puts them constantly under the spotlight.

Well then we agree that it seems to be fine how they do it.

What does “other instances” mean in a federated context?

It means that the instance admins have a higher responsibility towards their own users, mods and communities wishes.

I have another example for this !dataisbeautiful@mander.xyz

Yeah well i don't think they should lock that community if the mod doesn't want it to be locked. Do you really think that would be right? Should i go and demand the solarpunk bird community to be locked because world's is more active? I think it'd be pretty bad if they did, not that i think they would. Also i don't think that user you called out is part of world's staff.

The paradox of choice is something you have deal with in the fediverse i guess, starts at choosing a server. I don't think it should be that big of a deal, as long as communities can be found from the instances internal search.

0.19.5

I still don't think they keep us from being upgraded to be mean.

[-] AchtungDrempels@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago

LW staff “name squatting”

I have a feeling that LW staff would give a different reason for this. As they did with the community that you asked to be locked (not deleted, i misremembered this ;). And yes, that mod agreed and now the community is locked. That's great! But i won't hold it against world admins to not listen to people from other instances asking for communities to be locked, when the mods are still active users. If they did that i would have more of a problem with it. I think this turned out perfect? But if a mod doesn't want to oblige to your requests, then so be it, i think that is just fair.

54% of the instances use it

Oh wow, i would have thought it would be more. I would like to be "up to date" and see all the images i uploaded and maybe delete some but i still i think it is a good idea that they are being cautious and i trust them on their judgement, i don't believe they refrain from updating for shady reasons or out of spite or whatever.

LW would become even more centralized, in a chicken and egg way

Maybe enough people will recommend different instances this time? I wanted to sign up at .ml originally, but they didn't accept anything, lots of people recommended world. I think it was also on top of the join-lemmy site and the shuffling came later but i might remember that wrong. I didn't want to join an instance with a country code and also not a niche instance dedicated to a topic that i am not all that interested in (computers, startrek, furries, lgbtq...).

Solving the issue ourselves

That issue is not being solved if nobody even realize it's there or is just being swept under the rug until it comes up with the next wave!?

Talking about upgrades, LW plans to skip 0.19.5 as their upgrades are always so impactful due to their size and the centralization of communities there, preventing a third of the Lemmy users to use new features.

All of us who are already on board can leave for a cutting edge instance. I think it's a good thing that they want to keep world stable and take their time.

Communities can already be migrated at the moment.

What, like automatically transfer subscribers (and hopefully posts at some point) etc? I thought everybody needs to be on board and then do it manually?

I sometimes feel like some people in the LW staff are reluctant to close some of their communities, even if unmanaged, and that prevents communities on other instances from really getting popular.

As they should be, not just delete some community because some user claimed it was dead and unmoderated (like i saw you do recently with a community which had an active user as admin ;). If they just deleted those communities i guess you'd go at them again with the power trip accusations.

Papa and the kids, four days ago, the first day they left the balcony

I thought they'd be gone by last weekend, but flight school apparently takes some time. Was awesome seeing their first excursions off of the balcony and onto the roof gutter. I was so happy to be there for it. And i have a video of them returning from their first little flight, haha. The older one seems now to go flying with papa, the smaller one - i think - with mama, at least they showed up together yesterday. The younger one still sleeps on my balcony. It has been alone there for the last two nights, first evening alone it seemed a bit worried. Maybe today it will find somewhere else to sleep, i think it may be two days younger than the other one.

This weekend i'll clean up the mess and barricade their nest spot so they don't keep breeding here. It was nice to have them but i kinda want the balcony back for myself, i was minimizing my balcony time so they could do their pigeon stuff in peace. Really caring parents, very nice to see.

and their little stinkybums.

Today one of the lil' stinkybums flew onto a flower pot. They'll be flying out into the dangerous world in a few days. Yesterday evening, opposite side of the garden, a kestrel caught a bird. Don't know what bird it was who had a nest under the roof gutter, the swifts are already on their way to Africa.

Fluffy Pigeon (lemmy.world)

This is my favorite pigeon of the goofy balcony crew. She moves very funny, and often times she fluffs up her head feathers which i find super cute, like in the picture, but the other feathers aren't fluffed up.

She and her lover came by with their baby, but i try to have a heart of stone and not feed them to not disturb the breeding couple on my balcony. Her lover is also very funny.

Not sure how you all feel about pigeon content in here. I love pigeons.

They are really well hidden and silent, didn't even realize for two days after i came back from my holidays. I already knew this pigeon couple from before my holidays (was gone for two months), they are like the regulars in my garden.

This is the father sitting on the eggs. BTW I had made this mess deliberately to keep pigeons from trying to breed there, it seemed to work while i was at home i guess. Hope when the little ones hatch they won't fall into any gaps there.

I tried to call the local bird help, if maybe they would swap the eggs for fake ones, but i could not reach anybody, they have too much to do this time of the year and i reckon pigeons breeding on a balcony ain't no emergency either.

Just another sparrow. But pretty happy with how the cellphone photo turned out, it was totally not scared. I bribed it with french fries though (original ones, since i am now in St Jean de Luz, France). Probably not the best food but i guess it's what it came for.

I am going on holiday now for a while, already missing the balcony crew.

*edit: It is a young goldfinch, right?

If the spirit of the fediverse is to spread everything across small instances, then i think it would be really important to make communities, especially niche communities, easier to discover across instances. Since it is not planned to crawl federated instances community catalog, i think instance admins, or maybe even the lemmy software itself, should point more obvious to services like https://lemmyverse.net/communities to search for communities instead of the lemmy (or mbin, piefed) internal search. It's been a while since i have seen someone talk about these community crawler services.

Instances that don't federate a remote community won't even list this community in the user profile of a moderator.

Goldfinch (lemmy.world)

I am hyped. The goldfinches found their way to Drempels Nutty Sticks™. They felt like the rarest finches in the garden and now they're on my balcony.

I reckon the birds and settings i am posting are boring for real birdies, i feel like as long as the traffic here is kinda low it's fine to post still.

..and a goofy bonus bird :)

Clever Bastards (files.catbox.moe)

So the parakeets have figured out my lamp feeder. I tried some fine tuning, but they still are at it with this latest variant. No trouble at all landing on it. I think they don't like it as much though, they only stay for a short while now, i kinda hope they end up thinking it's not worth it anymore.

Do you think a wider plate would make this harder or easier for the parakeeets to get to the food?
