I saw the movie on an airplane which is why I'm having trouble remembering it.

A dramatic film that centers around a couple, man and woman, released somewhere between 2007 and 2016 I believe. They don't seem too happy and argue a lot, the man is immature and unhappy. The key thing is that midway through the movie, the man realizes he has control over, or made a wish or something and the woman now agrees with whatever he says and follows his decisions or instructions. The guy loves it at first and then slowly realizes the loss of his partner's free will kills the energy of a relationship and he wishes he had back his girl who could argue with him. The movie ends and he's still unhappy. I don't remember the female role hardly at all, the male actor I believe might have been like a B+/A- actor at that point in his career, I remember thinking I was surprised how good he was. Might have been someone who had done more comedy and tried a serious role?

I've tried scrolling through IMDB for those years looking at top few hundred films released in a year, lists of dramas by year, etc. and have come up empty.

I don't remember many other plot points but appreciate any leads and will answer any questions that might help you help me!

I thought of that, too, but I don't think Click had the spouse losing her free will. Didn't they separate in that movie?

[-] WarmSoda@lemm.ee 3 points 1 year ago

Did he control other people somehow in Click? Maybe OP is mixing up the wife with someone else.

I don't think so. Iirc he just goes on autopilot when he activates the remote.

[-] WarmSoda@lemm.ee 3 points 1 year ago

Yeah you're right. I just looked up the movie. That plot is pretty damn depressing lol

[-] Synnr@sopuli.xyz 2 points 1 year ago

I think so.

Thank you for trying but Adam Sandler as an A-/B+ actor?

[-] Landmammals@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

Sandler was definitely B list at the height of his career

I asked Chatgpt and it offered "Ruby Sparks" as a solution. The cast includes Antonio Banderas and Annette Benin.

[-] cheezoid2@sh.itjust.works 12 points 1 year ago

Not to be confused with Annette Benign, her troublesome but ultimately harmless sister.

[-] thelastknowngod@lemm.ee 3 points 1 year ago

Ruby Sparks sounds plausible. She was a character in a book he was writing that came to life though.. They weren't arguing. Paul Dano and Zoe Kazan are great though. Dano might be considered B+/A- popular..

I also asked chatgpt and got The Adjustment Bureau but I'm thinking Matt Damon was more than a B+ actor at the time.

It also suggest The One I Love. Never heard of it before

Definitely not Adjustment Bureau. That's a PKD book turned into a "thriller".

OPs movie sounds like something Adam Sandler would do.

[-] Countess425@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

OP's fever dream definitely gives Adam Sandler vibes.

My theory is that you fell asleep on the plane and dreamt this whole story. You should write up the screenplay and get that movie made. Better yet, make it a movie within a movie, about someone haunted by a movie they vaguely remember having seen on a plane, but it turns out it was all a dream. So they write up the screenplay and get the movie made...

I saw Inception and Despicable Me back to back on a long haul flight overnight while I was super sleepy but couldn't sleep, and my recollection of either of them was a complete mess. I'm not sure but "Leo reluctantly looking after little cartoon girls while battling some yellow gremlins as the city was folding over them" is probably not a precise enough description of the plot.

Have it shot like Adaptation

[-] MrsDoyle@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 year ago

I remember liking Adaptation, but I can't recall a single other thing about it. Was there a houseplant on the poster maybe?

[-] Davel23@kbin.social 4 points 1 year ago

Adaptation is nominally the film adaptation of the book The Orchid Thief. As such, there is an orchid on the poster.

[-] Ingiald@feddit.nl 6 points 1 year ago

It fits with "Ruby Sparks" wich is also the name of the female lead. Main character, Paul Dano, is a writer I believe and through writing he can change his girlfriend.

Is it the invention of lying?

[-] Hogger85b@kbin.social 1 points 1 year ago

That was my take with Ricky Gervais.

Think there were some other movies around that era two with similar plot lines

[-] RvTV95XBeo@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 year ago

This sounds like basically the plot of Jessica Jones from Killgrave's perspective. I think Rick and Morty may have done a similar bit, but I can't think of any movies in that space

[-] Kaosmace@lemm.ee 3 points 1 year ago

"Absolutely anything" staring Simon Pegg?

[-] echodot@feddit.uk 2 points 1 year ago

It's not his wife in that though it's his next door neighbour or something.

[-] Player2@sopuli.xyz 1 points 1 year ago

Bing thinks it's 'The Invention of Lying' (2009).
