Rightfully so.

Lemmy servers are hosted by just some people that often don't even accept donations, shoulder the entire legal liability and are sys admin all together by themselves.

And then there is the clownshow reddit being a gigantic company and not even able to not be a gigantic shitshow.

[-] scytale@lemm.ee 70 points 1 year ago

I'm actually seeing more and more .world users getting pissed as the downtimes become more frequent now.

[-] upturned8393@lemmy.ml 39 points 1 year ago

I mean that is the problem of too many people being on that one instance.

[-] tool@lemmy.world 21 points 1 year ago

From what I understand, capacity isn't the issue, it's that they're being repeatedly DDoS'ed

[-] saltedFish@discuss.tchncs.de 11 points 1 year ago

It's a chicken and egg problem, their high popularity makes them a ddos target

Careful, you might have to interact with spooky scary communists if you switch it up! specter

[-] tox_solid@lemmy.ml 25 points 1 year ago

That's what happened to me and I'm radicalized now.

I moved instances after the downtime when Sync came out, it's been smooth sailing since

IF you want to switch to an alternative instance use the tool Lasim to synchronize your accounts: synchronize subscriptions, settings and/or blocks. Tool is available for Windows, Linux and MacOs.

Cuz you can just use another smaller instance, as you should.

Lemmy.zip and lemm.ee are cool

[-] Fibby@lemm.ee 40 points 1 year ago

Everyone talking about how small and better lemm.ee is really starting to give "have you heard about this hidden gem The Witcher 3?" vibes.

[-] agoseris@lemm.ee 16 points 1 year ago

lemm.ee isn't even that small. It's the 6th largest active lemmy instance iirc

[-] boot@lemmy.loungerat.io 21 points 1 year ago

Hidden. Gem.

[-] c0mbatbag3l@lemmy.world 10 points 1 year ago

That's the point of the joke, the witcher 3 is a huge game but people always act like they're in on some secret for knowing that it's good.

For all the people that like to talk about having access to the whole fediverse and decide for themselves who to block...

mander.xyz and ttrpg.network are both rather niche instances in their own right, but don't defederate, and I don't believe are defederated by, anyone.

No one join them and say/do anything toxic though, don't ruin a good thing for me lol

Tbh I've just stopped using my world account at this point. Lemmy.ca has been much more reliable so far lol.

[-] Boinketh@lemm.ee 14 points 1 year ago

I started at lemm.ee because I knew that signing up to the biggest instance was a bad idea. We have pretty good uptime and it doesn't seem like lemm.ee has been wrapped up in any of the drama of the bigger instances.

If only federation existed... and other instances existed....

Gotta love decentralised shit

[-] PeleSpirit@lemmy.world 28 points 1 year ago

I've been trying to find a smaller instance and I tried a couple, they see waaaaaay different things. I can't even see lemmy.world on one of them. I might have to keep all of the instances and just jump around.

[-] frozen@lemmy.frozeninferno.xyz 30 points 1 year ago

Join mine! I run several tools in order to federate with the most popular content automatically. I'm keeping user count limited, but sign ups are open at the moment.

[-] PeleSpirit@lemmy.world 12 points 1 year ago

I seriously like your rules, lol.

I never gave reddit 1c and blocked all ads. I donate to lemmy.world.

I have zero anger when lemmy is down, I despised reddit, especially towards the end.

I really wish more people would donate to lemmy I think it's totally fair to pay for someone to manage and help with running the site.

It's hard to just say "volunteer".... Even if people volunteer and we can only afford to send 50% of their fee their way it's still something....

If we want lemmy to thrive without ads we have to all pitch in. Just give 2$/ month... If we all did that we'd be able to hire people full time...

[-] A_A@lemmy.ca 22 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Up time 76% on lemmy.world // last 24h.

wjats so good about lemmy.world compared to lemmy.ml

[-] Kerrigor@kbin.social 22 points 1 year ago

More letters

[-] meldrik@lemmy.wtf 15 points 1 year ago

Lemmy.world is run by the same people as mastodon.world. I guess a lot of users from mastodon.world went to Lemmy.world and the rest was word of mouth.

[-] Laticauda@lemmy.ca 11 points 1 year ago

I think the name does a lot of heavy lifting in regards to pulling in new users. It sounds more official or general because of the world part.

lemmy.world isn't run by communists

[-] kameecoding@programming.dev 9 points 1 year ago

that sounds like a downside, unless you mean the kinda USSR/Chinese "communists" that are just state capitalists/feudalists

The funny thing is that Reddit with its big teams and infrastructure was also sluggish and going down a lot this week and we keep forgetting that. No excuses for Reddit.

[-] Alaskaball@hexbear.net 14 points 1 year ago
[-] secondaccountlemmy@lemmy.world 13 points 1 year ago

I mean communities being on world is an issue too.

[-] primalanimist@lemmy.today 12 points 1 year ago

Same reason I am here. I had two small communities for my interests there, but it was down so often that I decided to move here AND move my communities. This place seems a lot more stable. That's really the downside of huge servers on lemmy IMO. If communities centralize on one server, whenever that one server is down, so are the communities for everyone.

I would totally run my own server but I'm not tech enough. I have spare hardware, and I have a 1GB fiber connection, but I am not a network security expert, so I am afraid my home IP address would be targeted and disrupt my house Internet in general. Even if I don't allow others to create account or communities on my server, I still feel like it's a risk for me because I am not skilled enough to deal with threats.

Understandable since one is a government funded fedposting psyop running on servers in the basement of the FBI building. The other is Reddit.

Ayyyyyyy.

I switched to lemm.ee, it's much more stable since it's not constantly being attacked by script kiddies. I have a theory a user got banned, and is making it their personal mission to ruin .world's performance. Please donate to your home instance owner(s) if they have that set up. Even if it's just a little, it can make everyone's experience better.

[-] alcoholicorn@hexbear.net 12 points 1 year ago

That wouldn't surprise me, I've seen ddos's against smaller servers over dumber things.

But given that they preemptively ban instances for not supporting NATO and the IMF and don't preemptively ban nazi, transphobe, and pedophile instances, fuck em.

The fediverse is weaker if .world is allowed to color people's perception of Lemmy.

[-] HurlingDurling@lemm.ee 9 points 1 year ago

Reddit servers down? Didn't notice

[-] koyo@ani.social 9 points 1 year ago

this is the opposite on reddit (obvious reasons). ppl go ham when someone mentions lemmy.world is down lol

[-] samus12345@sh.itjust.works 15 points 1 year ago

Which is especially funny since you can just log into a different instance and keep browsing, unlike with Reddit.
