Wow but they got 83 votes? I wonder if it was all from countries that they supply grain or energy to?

That's a lot of votes.

Russia has a lot of credibility with countries that hate the West. Enemy of my enemy and so on.

I can't think of a country that belongs there

USA creeping up on Mongolia 🤙

[-] Jaytreeman@kbin.social 3 points 11 months ago

I prefer that idea. It should be an honor.

…how exactly is any country higher than North Korea? Aren’t they basically all slaves?

[-] TvanBuuren@feddit.nl 10 points 11 months ago

Every country willing to put in the work belongs there.

Everyone is flawed, country's included. We can keep each other in check, just like in any social dynamic. Those who willingly and purposefully break the rules though, there is a special place for those.

And it's not on that table.

You guys fine and/or jail people up to 12 months for smoking weed my guy

[-] Squizzy@lemmy.world 3 points 11 months ago

What? We can't even get decent sentences for lads with hundreds of convictions this is either an outlier or there are other circumstances.

Also hardly a human rights violation worthy of comparison to the current members of the HR Council.

Switzerland? Iceland? Norway? Sweden?

[-] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 5 points 11 months ago

Costa Rica? They don't even have a military.

I’ll nominate NZ, they’re not perfect but one of the best you can get.

I looked it up. They treat a minority group pretty horribly.

The ethnic Tibetan. They're effectively not allowed to own property. It also sounds like there's a cultural genocide going on

[-] favrion@lemmy.world 1 points 11 months ago

Oh. What party poopers.

The world still makes some sense. 83/193 is still disturbingly high.

[-] rckclmbr@lemm.ee 5 points 11 months ago

The optimist in me thinks those 83 want them to have a seat so they can keep conversation open and help them be more self aware on what they are doing

[-] Jaysyn@kbin.social 29 points 11 months ago

Good. Fuck #Ruzzia straight to hell.

[-] sentient_loom@sh.itjust.works 16 points 11 months ago

That's hilarious.

[-] takeda@lemmy.world 12 points 11 months ago

Didn't Russia quit that seat themselves in 2022?

[-] CapgrasDelusion@kbin.social 52 points 11 months ago

https://news.un.org/en/story/2022/04/1115782

They were suspended by vote, then AFTER the vote results they said they had actually already quit. It was elementary school playground levels of "nuh uh" and within a year they tried to come back.

[-] fluxion@lemmy.world 2 points 11 months ago

And somehow it worked, apparently

This is the best summary I could come up with:

UNITED NATIONS (AP) — Russia was defeated in its bid to regain a seat in the U.N.’s premiere human rights body by a significant majority in Tuesday’s election in the General Assembly, which voted last year to suspend Moscow after its invasion of Ukraine.

Russia was competing against Albania and Bulgaria for two seats on the Geneva-based Human Rights Council representing the East European regional group.

The only other competitive race was in the Latin America and Caribbean group where Cuba, Brazil, and the Dominican Republic defeated Peru for three seats.

Moscow’s U.N. ambassador, Vassily Nebenzia, accused the United States on Monday of leading a campaign to prevent their return to the council.

Felice Gaer, director of the American Jewish Committee’s Jacob Blaustein Institute for the Advancement of Human Rights, was among the non-government letter-writers also urging Russia’s defeat.

In last year’s election, Venezuela, South Korea and Afghanistan lost contested races, but countries including Vietnam and Sudan, which have been accused of having abysmal human rights records, won seats.

The original article contains 879 words, the summary contains 169 words. Saved 81%. I'm a bot and I'm open source!
