The actual first strip is not exactly all sweetness and light either.

The parody is much closer to the original than i expected.

Most of these are pretty depressing, made me sad

I'd never read these before, but this girl is SAVAGE.

[-] wjrii@kbin.social 6 points 11 months ago

Yeah, that same sensibility that kept Charlie Brown a hopeless sad sack was even more pronounced in the early strips. Young Charles Schulz was edgy and fresh. Middle aged Schulz was still brave and creative. Old Schulz seemed content simply not to descend quite so deeply into self parody as Jim Davis or Bill Keane.

I don’t remember who that girl is, but she’s written like a combination of Sally and Lucy, except with the nihilism turned up to 11.

I feel like a nerd that my first thought was "but the strip was originally named Lil Folks this doesn't make any sense".

Nerrrrrd

[-] NielsBohron@lemmy.world 9 points 11 months ago

It does kind of make sense if you know Schultz was from Minnesota and Minnesotans call all little kids "peanut"

So, "Lil Folks" to "Peanuts" is a really logical choice and people from the upper Midwest might not even notice the difference!

[-] ripcord@kbin.social 3 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago)

Nah. It was a named forced on him that referenced the "peanut gallery" and he always kind of hated it. But eventually he felt like he had to stick with it.

Edit: nerrrrrrrrrrd

[-] NielsBohron@lemmy.world 3 points 11 months ago

Huh, I guess maybe Minnesotans calling kids "peanut" came from the comic strip, instead of the other easy around. TIL.

Thanks, nerd ;)

Love the Twilight Zone reference

You should also check out the original story the episode and its sequel were based off of. It's a good story.
