I knew of Grayjay but did not know it was open source now. A lot of the app is written in Kotlin which is promising for cross platform

It can be cross platform. On mobile and desktop

True. I did make a feature request to have the Newpipe Extractor in the app

I hope this project gets more contributors to help make it as good or better than Newpipe. Written in Dart using Flutter can allow it to be compiled for Android, iOS and desktop

Discord is the worst. Requires a phone number, does not allow email aliases and logs your chats.

Matrix and SimpleX is way better

Any handheld pcs that do not have a battery and has ethernet port (Or a usb port were one can get a usb to ethernet adapter)? and still have a few usb ports available for a headset and keyboard/mouse.

Would prefer one that came with windows or linux were I can flash windows or mostly any linux distro on it. Do not care if it has high specs since I plan on connecting to my main PC and streaming from it using moonlight.

I was also thinking of that. I want to game in bed before bedtime. Is there any good mounts or stands for a portable monitor that is ideal for being in bed?

[-] trymeout@lemmy.world 4 points 11 months ago

I was thinking it would look like the steam deck but have a hdmi port (or usb-c port) for video and audio (or at least video) and a regular usb port for the controller. I am fine with being tethered to my pc since I can get long cords and I would prefer do use this monitor and controller without batteries if possible.

I will check out the portable monitors and see if I can make it work. My goal is to game in my bed before bedtime and I do not want to buy a big TV in my room just to have a clear picture.

This one looks promising especially if the dev adds this feature I requested. It is written in Dart.

Are there handheld monitors? Like a handheld pc (steam deck) without the pc, just a monitor with a controller built into it that has a HDMI and USB port coming out of it which you will stick into your PC?

Not complianing about it since it gives us a good selection, but it is a trend I have been noticing lately.

I had an idea/feature request for Linux itself.

With many debian based distros (Arch has this too but it is a different GUI) you can encrypt your entire computer which will require you to enter a password to decrypt it when booting it up.

On every linux distro I used weather it is debian or arch based, you can setup a specific user to be the user the computer automatically logins to when the system boots up.

The annoying thing about using the auto login feature for a user is that it does not unlock the keyring. If you have apps setup to run in the background on startup, they may require you to unlock your keyring. Sure, you can set the keyring password to be blank but this is not a good idea for security reasons.

This was my idea to solve this. It will require the computer to be setup to be fully encrypted however.

The auto login users keyring password will be stored and be encrypted using the system encrypted password. When the computer is booted up and unlocked, it will decrypt the keyring password and use that to unlock the users keyring when logging into the user.

This way the keyring gets unlocked but the keyring password is stored secure and not in plain text.

Not sure the best place to make this feature request? Debain github repo perhaps?

Ubuntu is great but uses snaps and adds other canonical bits. Linux Mint is essentially perfect but does not come with gnome desktop. Is there a ubuntu based distro that is essentially like linux mint but offers gnome as a desktop?

Are all apps on the IzzyOnDroid F-Droid Repository fully open source? Or are there partially open source apps and closed source apps on the IzzyOnDroid F-Droid Repository?

Modern lemmy web UI (lemmy.world)
submitted 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) by trymeout@lemmy.world to c/asklemmy@lemmy.ml

Is there a modern lemmy web ui option out there? lemmy.world and all the other instances I know use a lightweight, basic UI which has its benifits and gives a bit of an old reddit feel.

EDIT: Looking into lemmy more. It will seems the main UI HTML structure is solid. I think a better theme could be made (CSS stylesheet) to make lemmy look more modern like reddit and having a new theme. The current theme and a modern theme could exist on an instance and be changed in the users setting.
