It is pretty good but pretty reduced in functionality imo. Thats why I generally suggest fluffychat. Its nowhere perfect either but it works better on a daily basis for me.

[-] haui_lemmy@lemmy.giftedmc.com 2 points 5 hours ago

I know. I said semi abandoned because element x is their focus, which is the reason they are not adding features to element and are hesitant to put in fixes for things that would require massive changes.

This is still not ideal because the flagship app isnt advancing in a good speed. Thats why I dont recommend it.

[-] haui_lemmy@lemmy.giftedmc.com 4 points 14 hours ago

Matrix is great and works great.

Element is a semi abandoned client that happened to come from some of the makers of matrix.

Use literally anything else. Fluffychat works for me. Element is okay for debugging sometimes so I keep it handy.

But the commenters point stands. In matrix, you can send whatever you like, as illegal or morally corrupt as you wish because its nobody‘s fucking business AND e2ee.

If someone on my server sends csam, I would never know unless someone reported it to me. Because thats how privacy works.

[-] haui_lemmy@lemmy.giftedmc.com 9 points 14 hours ago

Okayyyy… thats not great. I just read one of the threads and thats scary.

The person(s?) maintaining this seems to be VERY BAD at communicating. They did fix the auto start problem but did not at all discuss this from what I see. Thats not great.

[-] haui_lemmy@lemmy.giftedmc.com 5 points 14 hours ago

It works very well and there is no speed difference at all. Of course you wont ever get anything worth in life without either putting in the work or paying either with money or your privacy.

Okay! You got me there!

Using the word woke unironically is one of the best tells that someone is an idiot.

[-] haui_lemmy@lemmy.giftedmc.com 2 points 2 days ago

Okay, thanks for elaborating.

I agree. There are many selfish people out there. But they dont live in a vacuum. In a world where you have the repsonsibility for your surroundings, many people could rise to the occasion. Also, if a water pipe breaks in front of my home and you decide to vote against fixing it together, what do you think will happen to you, either when you need help or if I‘m vindictive, sooner?

We dont have anything to compare our living conditions to because we have never lived any different than now. We dont attempt to test self governed communities. What do you think why that is?

One hint that shows me that it works are coops. They work without central oversight because its not the oversight that makes us interact but our own intellect.

[-] haui_lemmy@lemmy.giftedmc.com 4 points 2 days ago

Okay. How did you arrive at this conclusion?

[-] haui_lemmy@lemmy.giftedmc.com 2 points 2 days ago

I wish. Sadly, voting on issues that directly impact you is not a reality yet.

[-] haui_lemmy@lemmy.giftedmc.com 4 points 2 days ago

Thats a really good question! Thank you.

This idea is part of a larger premise so I‘d need to establish a VERY different reality that most of us live in now. Funny enough, your point of people acting out of pure self interest is one part that would go first because these people would not survive the world I‘m imagining.

Federation is part of anarchism and in most interpretations I‘ve heard and read so far, communities would work for their shared benefit so of course you fix your neighbors roof, otherwise they will not help you in the future.

[-] haui_lemmy@lemmy.giftedmc.com 4 points 2 days ago

My personal wet dream would be the street you live on making the decisions for that street like building a traffic light, the block making decisions about say, the plumbing.

everyone voting in a direct manner every week or month via app. Our representative democracy has been corrupted a long time ago so it is time to change that.

Hi folks! First of all, huge appreciation for this insane lemmy client. I‘ve been using it for two years roughly and I‘m over the moon about it.

I want this app to be even more wonderful so I wanted to share my idea for a more integrated search:

Currently, when you‘re on a small instance like mine, you dont see every community on every server you are connected to due to the way AP works.

For that reason, I would love to see all communities and be able to subscribe to them by using lemmyverse.net as a search option.

Steps to reproduce

  1. make new instance
  2. add user
  3. connect with voyager
  4. type anything in the search bar
  5. find nothing

Btw I know we already have the „discover“ option but it works different from what I‘m suggesting and is less intuitive and more cluttered than my approach imo.

Suggested behavior

  1. You hit search and get „lemmyverse.net“ as a search option
  2. click it
  3. see all communities with the content you searched for
  4. hit subscribe
  5. get content

I hope this makes sense to you as I think this will boost the discoverability of lemmy by a huge margin! This would also probably be a unique feature, setting voyager even more apart from other clients (and of course be a great role model for them to follow).

Thanks for reading and have a good one.

Today I encountered something new and dystopian:

You can airplay from your iphone to an appletv but now youtube drops and locks the quality at 360p, making the content unwatchable on larger screens.

Once you disable airplay, the quality jumps back to 1080p. If you choose 1080p before and enable airiplay after, it still changes.

This hasnt been an issue for years. this new anti consumer move prompted me to order another raspberry pi to put kodi on.

I'm experiencing some odd behavior. Lemmy communities on my server seem to have stalled (no new posts and or comments) since 2 days.

I went ahead and upgraded lemmy to 0.19.5 and postgres to the current version but to no avail so far.

.ml got banned by fail2ban but I set it on the ignore list now. any ideas where to start looking for the problems? I checked for the other big communities and they're okay it seems.

I can of course start adding logs in here but I would love to know which service or log I should start with.

Thanks for reading. Have a good one.

Edit: outgoing federation works. this post made it to ml in seconds.

Hi folks, I'm trying to put my newly acquired HDDs to good use and at the same time manage the minuscule amount of storage my vps has. Since it is hosting several fedi services, I need some external storage and I figured I'd just tunnel some object storage from home.

So I set up a working wireguard connection from my homenetwork to the vps, connected the object storage (GarageHQ) to one end and probably will connect the fedi services (lemmy, mastodon, matrix, peertube) to the other.

Here comes the issue: do I have to make the respective wireguard instances a proxy for the services to be able to speak with each other or do I even have to make a site to site connection to connect the two docker networks?

The connection would look something like this: GarageHQ---WireguardHS---WireguardVPS---Mastodon|Mastodon---NginxPM---OpenWeb

Anyone got something like this to work so far? Am I overlooking something major?

Thanks for reading, have a good one.

I'm currently running both a home server and a VPS. The former is not reachable through the internet, only through vpn. The latter hosts public services.

The VPS is regularly cutting it very close with storage and today I messed up and crashed the whole stack trying to make an impromptu backup. Lesson learned: we need more storage! I could just rent more storage but just today I updated my home server with 16 TB of raid 1 enterprise HDDs.

So I thought I could maybe do a (wireguard) VPN tunnel directly to some storage service that I host on my homeserver. The upload is not great but realistically I dont need much. The important stuff stays on the VPS. Mainly videos, pictures and other stuff that doesnt get accessed a lot should go there. The rest should be "cached" at the VPS.

I would have to host wireguard on a server port, only have it access one folder which doesnt contain anything important, forward the port on the router and have the vps have the keys. Even if someone gets into the VPS and steals the keys, they only get that one file storage folder.

Has anyone done this? Are there services that do this or do I just host wireguard and thats it?

Thanks for reading. Have a good one! :)

I saw a community from feddit.de on lemmyverse.net which I wanted to explore but I got a server error opening the community. I thought it might be abandoned or deleted but feddit.de seems completely unreachable atm.

I also checked with multiple devices in case I would have been banned for some reason.

Does anyone know why that is the case? Have a good one.

Feel free to lmk if I need to ask this somewhere else.

I tried a couple license finders and I even looked into the OSI database but I could not find a license that works pretty much like agpl but requiring payment (combined 1% of revenue per month, spread evenly over all FOSS software, if applicable) if one of these is true:

  • the downstream user makes revenue (as in "is a company" or gets donations)
  • the downstream distributor is connected to a commercial user (e.g. to exclude google from making a non profit to circumvent this license)

I ask this because of the backdoor in xz and the obviously rotten situation in billion dollar companies not kicking their fair share back to the people providing this stuff.

So, if something similar exists, feel free to let me know.

Thanks for reading and have a good one.

I will probably be harassed for this but I feel like I need to act.

The recent debate and decision by world to federate with threads seems to have sparked massive pro meta propaganda. Some accounts post completely one sided articles nearly every day, using carefully crafted language to shape meta as the „facilitator“ of the fediverse and some ~~beligerent~~ benevolent god. You dont have to scroll far in this community to find the posts I‘m talking about.

Please consider reporting these posts for the propaganda they are and asking your admins to defederate from threads.net.

To show you why meta is not welcome in the fediverse, here is a quote from the fedipact which is the reason I have defederated threads in my own instance.

THEIR LONG TRACK RECORD OF PURE EVIL

i'm just gonna paste some links here because there's no point in paraphrasing what others have already said more eloquently

(if you're wondering why i'm using archive.org it's to break the fucking paywalls on these articles because fuck that, information wants to be free)

that time they helped facilitate a genocide

that time they helped try to rig an election

that time they did creepy behavioral experimentation on their users

so, yeah. there's legiterally shitloads of precedent here. not to mention all the privacy concerns. which brings us to the need many feel to protect ourselves from this insidious megacorp...

Against one thing meta-shills often try to ascribe: we dont have a problem with the people on there but it is literally everything else.

Admins and Mods who read this, please consider signing the fedipact on https://fedipact.online

Thank you very much for reading and have a nice day.

Edit: wording, crossed out

Sepiasearch for forgefed? (lemmy.giftedmc.com)

how to find?

The discussion in this community (and others) often goes toward „where can I find [foss software] with [feature]?“

The answers are often similar. Sometimes its direct links, sometimes its a reference to the awesome list on github (why not forgejo?).

But many things are hard to find on that list and the - although repeating - answers are of varying quality.

elastic search for forgefed?

What if we instead had a (federated?) search engine for FOSS software with feature tags and PRs/Suggestions which features are in there but not mentioned yet. Basically like sepiasearch by peertube.

Also important: the current state of development, maybe user numbers and stars/ratings/comments. Because some stuff on the awesome list is borderline unusable if you‘re not really deep in tinkering.

Users are not the enemy

Considering that we are entering a critical phase for FOSS and walled gardens, we should do away with the RTFM approach entirely and embrace semi advanced users starting to use our programs. Although we shouldn’t take all of their shit, we should absolutely start taking criticism ok bad/unusable documentation of UI.

Thanks for reading. I hope my intention shows.

Hi folks, today I would like to solve this non critical issue which doesnt break the system but just bothers me a little:

When Discover (I think its discover?) informs me that I have new updates for my machine on the kde taskbar, I can right click and click „update“ but it doesnt do it.

Even if I have no sudo prompt at that time. Is this due to it being a sudo action or what is the issue? Any ideas?

Thanks for reading. Have a good one.
