Some people are desperate to paint themselves as victims of the media.

That seems to be the case.

The model, called GameNGen, was made by Dani Valevski at Google Research and his colleagues, who declined to speak to New Scientist. According to their paper on the research, the AI can be played for up to 20 seconds while retaining all the features of the original, such as scores, ammunition levels and map layouts. Players can attack enemies, open doors and interact with the environment as usual.

After this period, the model begins to run out of memory and the illusion falls apart.

Just terrible.

If there were some kind of global women's vigilante network to handle these things, I would definitely not snitch.

If you live in a big liberal city with a lot of tech people, then you probably have a really well organized team creating detailed maps. In that case, there's no reason to think that Google is any better than osm. In a lot of cases it's worse, especially for walking and cycling.

If you're in a smaller, poorer city or a rural area, there's a good chance that 80% or 90% of the addresses are just not there yet. Compare this random park in Berkeley, CA with labels for individual trees to this neighborhood in nearby Stockton, CA, which is assuredly more than 3-4 houses.

OSM usability really depends on where you live.

Image tool box doesn't seem to be able to arbitrarily rotate or add text. Some nice features, though.

Open Video Editor doesn't seem to be able to combine videos. I'm thinking something like CapCut, which allows combining photos, videos, and audio. It would be an ambitious project to be sure, but it seems like it should be doable.

[-] gedaliyah@lemmy.world 5 points 3 days ago

Great to hear! Can you name one for me?

[-] gedaliyah@lemmy.world 5 points 3 days ago

If you live in an area that's missing the data, it doesn't matter how good the app is. I regularly upload in my area, but it will be years before it is reliable as a primary app. I usually search in Organic Maps first, then in Google Maps. OSM gets me where I need about 10-20% of the time at most. Google Maps is about 99%.

There are multiple front-ends for YT Music. Song Tube is good, Libre Tube is good, Inner Tune, Musify, Vibe You, etc. I haven't used them all so I can't testify to them, but it is a deep bench.

[-] gedaliyah@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago

Some apps that I don't understand why no OSS exists:

  • Teleprompter app that allows you to read a scrolling script while recording video

  • basic photo editor to crop, rotate, color correct, add text

  • basic video editor to crop, clip, and combine video

  • visual voicemail

And just for fun, here are some OSS apps that are better than any non-free alternative: SD Maid, Firefox/Fennec, Aurora Store (OSS front-end for a very proprietary Google store), RTranslator, Syncthing, OSS Document Scanner.

So I have a retired but still very serviceable PC that I intend to use as my first home server. I gave two basic goals in self-hosting:

  1. Host family media through Jellyfin, etc. This would include tv, music, and possibly books as well. Many of these will be managed through the Arr apps.
  2. Degoogle my phone - I'm beginning by replacing Photos with Immich, but hope to also use Home Assistant, backup other phone data such as messages media, shopping lists, etc. I hope to replace Google storage/backup with Proton Drive.

So the question is what OS should I set up to run that? My proof of concept was an immich container running in xubuntu on an old laptop. I chose Xubuntu because I like the availability of documentation and community support for Ubuntu like distros, but wanted a lower powered alternative for the older device.

It seems to be working well, but I've had a few hiccups trying to update it, and I've heard that once you get into it, Linux distros like Ubuntu are not very user friendly for self-hosting as a beginner.

So is it better on the whole for a beginner to have a popular distro with lots if documentation and step by step guides, or to have a purpose-built OS like TrueNAS that might be more straightforward, but with less support?

This is bordering on misinformation but I'm not going to act on that.

The Iron Dome is primarily used to protect civilians, although it may also incidentally or occasionally be used to protect military targets as well.

Israel does not use its own citizens as cover for military operations. Here is a map of military bases in Israel, which are separate from civilians as required by international law.

There is no similar map of military sites in Gaza because Hamas uses civilian cover for military operations, including launching international attacks, from schools, mosques, churches, and hospitals.

[-] gedaliyah@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago

Great, thanks !

[-] gedaliyah@lemmy.world 45 points 4 days ago

So basically, your perspective is that a system that protects Israeli civilians is immoral because every single Israeli is immoral? Yeah, that seems very sane. /s

It essentially prevented a full scale armed conflict like this past year from 2011-2023. How many lives has it saved over that 12 years?

The phone app (by Google) has 700 mb of data on the phone. What is that? Call history? Contacts? Then what is in the contacts app? Is it safe to delete?

In the second half of 2024, a nova explosion in the star system called T Coronae Borealis, or T CrB, will once again be visible to people on Earth. T CrB will appear 1,500 times brighter than usual, but it won’t be as spectacular as the event in 1054.

New Feature: Synthetic View Modes

Under the hood, there are still only two main types of view: Card and Compact

However, Compact view is affected by several options which can be combined to create different view styles.

The "compact/card" switcher button has been replaced with a selector menu to select from one of 6 views:

  1. Card: The flagship Tesseract post view. Posts are shown as cards with all the media embed bells and whistles. Post body preview is set to 240 characters.

  2. Compact: The classic "compact" view as of 1.4.12. Feed margins are present, post images are thumbnails, the post body preview is 240 characters, and no media is embedded unless the post is expanded into card view.

  3. Wide Compact: Same as "compact" but without the feed margins. Posts span the full width of the display. Clicking the thumbnail image or the "expand" button in the post action bar will expand the post into card view.

  4. More Compact: Same as "wide compact" except the body preview length is set to zero and can be expanded.

  5. Ultra Compact: Same as "wide compact" except the thumbnails and the post body are hidden. Post body cannot be expanded, and you will need to click into the post to see it. Post can be expanded to card view only with the "expand" button in the post action bar. Expanding into card view does not reveal the post body, only the thumbnail image (if present). If the post is a media post, the embed will be available (either in full or click-to-play depending on settings)

  6. Reader: Same as "wide compact" except the entire post body is shown (up to 10,000 characters).

More views may be added along the way, but for now, those should cover more use cases without having to manually fiddle with the various options.

I'm really liking the "Reader" mode, myself.

Before I left Reddit, I used a plugin through the api to replace all of my comments with random gibberish and then delete them. Part of this was because (mandatory) fuck spez. But more importantly, it was to protect the anonymity of my account. After years of posting, there is likely enough personal information shared to potentially connect my Reddit habits to my online identity. I wasn't planning on using Reddit again in the future on that account, but I left it open in order to maintain some security control over the account. I'm not really sure what to do at this point because I still consider it a security vector that's a bit concerning. There's no way I can manually edit and delete all of my content with the snail's-pace reddit UI, and I have no ability to assure that my content will remain unavailable or at least not publicly displayed.

In 2014, a woman undergoing surgery for epilepsy had a tiny chunk of her cerebral cortex removed. This cubic millimeter of tissue has allowed Harvard and Google researchers to produce the most detailed wiring diagram of the human brain that the world has ever seen.

Biologists and machine-learning experts spent 10 years building an interactive map of the brain tissue, which contains approximately 57,000 cells and 150 million synapses. It shows cells that wrap around themselves, pairs of cells that seem mirrored, and egg-shaped “objects” that, according to the research, defy categorization. This mind-blowingly complex diagram is expected to help drive forward scientific research, from understanding human neural circuits to potential treatments for disorders.

Beginner question: Searching for my first dedicated server setup, and I have no idea what to look for in a hard drive. I see a huge difference between drives of the same capacity, so what makes the difference? I am looking to eventually have a media server that can run "-arr" programs, Jellyfin, Immich, sync music, books, etc.

What are the factors I should be paying attention to other than capacity? Is it a lot of branding and smoke and mirrors, or will I see a significant change in performance/reliability with different drives?

Hey everyone, Thunder v0.5.0 is finally here! This release cycle took a quite a bit of time, but introduces a lot of new features, changes, and fixes which should make for a even better Thunder experience. If you have any suggestions or feedback, feel free to discuss it in the Thunder community or on GitHub.

If you're enjoying Thunder and would like to show some support, star this project on GitHub! This helps gain visibility for the project and allows more contributors to help with the continued development of Thunder. If you'd like to show some appreciation, here is a post with details on how to donate to the active contributors of Thunder.

Important: Your feed settings (default feed type and sort) will now be based on your Lemmy account settings. The previous feed settings will now ONLY apply to guest accounts. As such, you may have to re-configure your default feed type and default sort type if you were previously using the in-app settings.

Now onto the update notes. This update brings a few major features:

🎉 New Features

  • The inbox page has been completely re-written with an updated design to more closely align with Material 3 design guidelines. There's also been a number of fixes to support quick actions within the inbox page (e.g., voting, saving, etc).
  • Thunder now respects more of your Lemmy account settings including your default feed/sort settings. You can update your display name, bio, email, and much more in the new Account Settings page. You can also quickly switch between different accounts to modify your Lemmy settings across all your authenticated accounts.
  • Additional Lemmy 0.19.x features have been added to Thunder including the ability to hide posts, custom thumbnail support, site content warnings, and more. We are still continuously working on bringing Thunder up to feature-parity with Lemmy, so let us know what features you would like to see.
  • Custom user notes/labels are now available in Thunder! This will allow you to add any custom notes to a given user. You can add user labels from the settings page via Settings -> User Labels. Alternatively, you can add labels through the action sheets by long pressing on a given comment and selecting User -> Add User Label.

ℹ General

  • The create/edit button for posts and comments have been moved to the markdown toolbar. This should hopefully make it more accessible for one-handed use.
  • URL filtering has been added to keyword filters. Simply add a new keyword filter with a URL, and it should be hidden from view.
  • Link sharing has been improved to support additional media/external links.

And much much more. I can't go through all the changes in the changelog, but for those who are curious, feel free to check out the full changelog below.

We have a Matrix space if you would like to join in on discussions: https://matrix.to/#/#thunderapp:matrix.org
