Glad to see something like this having become a thing! I'll look forward to giving this one to some of my friends who could use that

[-] Mr_Mofu@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 4 months ago

I dunno... what if really hungry people go by while I go shopping...?

[-] Mr_Mofu@lemmy.blahaj.zone 4 points 4 months ago

Gotta get some use out of my Vacume cleaner somehow....

[-] Mr_Mofu@lemmy.blahaj.zone 7 points 4 months ago

So Winter, Summer and all-weather on the first 3 wheels, you reccon a wooden tire would work for the last open wheel or should I just leave that spot open?

[-] Mr_Mofu@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 4 months ago

Wait, there is a difference between All Weather and All Season Tires? I always thought they where the same

[-] Mr_Mofu@lemmy.blahaj.zone 4 points 4 months ago

Is the difference really this huge?

[-] Mr_Mofu@lemmy.blahaj.zone 5 points 4 months ago

I see. I've always heard that Allweathers kinda suck especially in the Winter

[-] Mr_Mofu@lemmy.blahaj.zone 38 points 4 months ago

What? Do you not switch your tires like this? /s

Yeah I'm getting a different SD card tomorrow. One thats notably not an HC SD card, which someone noted to probably be not compatible with the adapter.

[-] Mr_Mofu@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 4 months ago

No there wasn't any documentation that was delivered with it sadly. Though seeing that in the tutorial it showed much of the same text on Boot up, i think its safe to asume the card itself works fine. Someone else in the thread mentioned that it might not work because its an HC SD card, which probably can't be read by the adapter, so tomorrow im buying a normal SD card to try it tho

[-] Mr_Mofu@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 4 months ago

I see, in that case I'll go to the store tomorrow and see if they got a tiny non HC SD card! Thank you!

I have been following the exact steps as outlined in this tutorial video, with no oddities happening along the way: https://youtu.be/twQbHWJF7LA

Well, I was able to follow it up and until we got to the Partitioning part, where he says to load DOS up in the machine, presumably meaning the PC-10 in this case.

The PC-10 loads the ISA IDE to SD Adapter just fine, it even tried to look for Drive C (The SD Card) for like 10-15 seconds, until giving up then and there (as seen in the pic). (ISA IDE to SD card Adapter i got:)

In other words it seems that the Adapter either doesn't recognise what is on the Card and I've done something wrong in burning the provided image onto it or formating, or it doesn't recognise the card itself to begin with. Its a Brand new 32GB SanDisk SD so that be pretty suprising...

In other words... im out of ideas... i tried different DIP switch configurations and all, but no change. Perhaps the PC-10 III Simply doesnt like the Adapter... or can't run 6.22... im just out of ideas and frustrated. I've had this thing for over a month now with no luck in seeing it run once properly, and original 5,25" DOS Bootdisks are expensive and take a while to arrive. Should I just bite the bullet and go for one? I don't know. Any advice is much appreciated...

With my little Computer Collection ever growing, I think its time to get myself an actual Monitor to use these Machines. So im wondering, what Monitor has most if not all Connection Types and modes of operation to be compatible with most/ if not all Computer from the 80s till the 90s?

I heard good thing about the Commodore 1084 series, though looking online I've seen multiple versions with some connection types missing or that Monochrome mode only sometimes being there. Are there specific Models in that series perhaps? Or should I look for entirely different monitor types? Thoughts?

So I got this Commodore PC-10 III, which the sellers photos clearly showed a different one without that red button at the front and a small Floppy Drive. It also cost me around 200€

On the other hand, from the Inside it seems to have a VGA Graphics card, a Hard Drive and even some type of Internet connector which are all nonstandart

So for one im quite split on if I should keep it or ask for a refund. But lets asume I keep it, there is another big problem.

For one the lacking Floppy drive was something I really really wanted and would need to build a new one in so I can even do things with it. On the other, much bigger hand, it doesnt seem to work.

Upon booting it up, it first shows some DOS text and then this red screen shows up (sorry about the flash)

After a bit, it then tries to check the RAM which after a bit returns a "Bad Ram" error. Then it prompts me to press the F1 Key which I do on my Commodore Keyboard which results in the text repeating itself and not continuing.

In other words, I cannot get past this screen. Pressing any key repeats that Message and the space bar plays a sound for some reason. The best thing I can try is to unplug everything and see if it boots then. If not, I'll inspect the board, especially the RAM Chips... but with not much knowhow this'll be a bit hard...

But yeah, what you all think? Keep it? refund it? Try to get it to run again? Any tips when it comes to that?

I've gotten really interested in old Computers since I got my Commodore PET 2 months ago, so to play some good ol MS Train Simulator and Stronghold 2, I got this massive beauty. Here is a little size comparison between it and my main PC

After taking that pic, I got done cleaning the CBM. The entire Body, Board and keys all look a lot better now and im glad to say that after all of that, it turned on no problem as well! (Before and after)

Now that I finally get to use this thing properly, there are a couple of oddities which are worth a second look I reccon!

For one, it runs Basic V1, so I asume this machine must be from the early run of production? The 2 chip expansions which can be seen on the board, seem to be "Exbasic: Level II" which is a Basic Expansion sorta thing that replaces the original Basic if loaded. It too, fully works.

3 of the issues I noticed thus far is that for one, pressing the " Button has some odd effects on the top row of the num pad, in which if I press a button up there, instead of them doing thier normal thing, they type in Letters and Symbols with the Background change thing. Pressing " again reverts it back to normal... still quite annoying tho, since those are were the cursor keys are at. I've also cleaned both the keyboard as well as its actual Circuitboard underneath, so I'm not sure whats causing this.

Another odditie is that sometimes at pure random, all the Characters on screen change to @'s and P's... then they revert back after a minute or two...

And for the final thing I'll definetly wanna fix with no clue how, is that the Monitor is oddly Zoomed out. The text is all further back then it should be making for a weird look. Old Burn-in from when this thing was actively used also assures me of that. No clue how one can fix that, any suggestions?

Also working on getting a SD-2-PET so I can run games and Diagnostics too, but thats for some another time! I also wanna thank this community for all the feedback! Couldn't have gotten this thing running if it wasnt for you!

I've had some pretty bad experience about cleaning older Machines such as my NES, where I've accidentally rubbed a lot of the letters and number off and noticed too late. Thats something im particularly worried about when it comes to the keycaps. Is there a reason to worry or tactics I should try to avoid rubbing the letters off?

Another thing im wondering is since its a bit yellow, what kind of Retrobrighting will work on both keycaps as well at the body of the machine itself? Since it seems to be Metal. Issue here also being that I wanna keep the original labels and stickers on the machine intact, so throwing the body into retrobrighting liquids seems like a bad idea... even disregarding the potential of rust afterwards...

Talking of body rust, I also guess that for general cleaning of the body and the keycap metal springs, something like using a wadpad and Ethernol 99 would work the best right?

I really don't wanna screw it up like the NES, so all advice is highly appreciated!

As promised yesterday, here is a look inside the machine! Before it also had spiders and spider webs inside but I cleaned those out!

Beside the dust, one very interesting thing I've found inside on the board are 2 seemingly modded chips with labels on them! The left one read "Ex Basic 2 | Sockel: Mitte | UD4" (Sockel: Mitte is german for Socket: Middle) And the right one just says "Ex Basic | Re 1"

On the back of the machine there is another Ex Basic related Label that says "Ex Basic=sys37100" I wonder what this is all about.

Gonna take an electric Bike pump and see if its powerful enough to get rid of the dust on Saturday, then its time to boot her up for the first proper time!
