i asked them about a legacy option and their answer boiled down to a somewhat condescending "tough shit, get used to it"

This thread made me look at it and see the newer driver

Is there an amd card/PC youd consider an equivalent or upgrade?

[-] Mandy@sh.itjust.works 1 points 6 days ago

i switched to 550 yesterday, it was 535 before that

[-] Mandy@sh.itjust.works 1 points 6 days ago

i didnt exactly stress test with a couple dozen games, the one game i tried had the same error message as before

[-] Mandy@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 week ago

idk man, mints driver manager do be saying nvidia is recommended

but besides that, i tried asking for an equivalent card on lemmy once, ill leave it at: im not inclined to try again

henceforth, if amd, prebuilt only

and regarding driver and kernel version, the moment i have to fiddle with either to get something working to the extent you are describing, im burning my pc

[-] Mandy@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 week ago

ngl, id rather stick with what is recommended before i go through hundreds of slightly differently named drivers

[-] Mandy@sh.itjust.works -1 points 1 week ago

for linux mint, i do the suggested driver (probably not the latest)

for others like endeavouros it was always the latest nvidia driver

i dont think i ever needed the extra ram anyway since i put it in, will remove them real quick

[-] Mandy@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 week ago

thank you for your own detailed response

when i say didnt work, it usually means two things, it either:

  1. didnt launch at all, no window, no nothing no error message

  2. window does open and it shows a error message/only shows an error message

yee, 16gb is plenty enough as it is anyway

Endeavouros alternatives? (sh.itjust.works)
submitted 10 months ago by Mandy@sh.itjust.works to c/linux@lemmy.ml

I dont have any problem with it i simply would like to see peoples different opinions, so, this is what the system would be generally used for/what id like it to do:

  1. stay out of my way (just work), ex: i dont get any notifications i dont want from the system itself and all i need to do is type 3 letters to initiate an update

  2. requires little ram to actually use (not really needed due to hardware but simply to reduce the pcs noise as much as possible, bonus points if programs generally do the same thing on it)

  3. Doesnt require too much fiddling (endevouros never needs this generally, when installing something it usually installs everything you need for things to work, i prefer GUIs usually but if its deadsimple commands like yay its fine as well)

  4. I game and stream so both would need to be doable as easy as possible (i use obs, when it comes to games i usually do emulation and try to avoid proton)

id love to hear what yall would recommend, thanks yall in advance

I running endeavouros and i tried to get discord screenshare (specifically tabshare) to work on firefox. No matter which distro i tried it on before that, never worked (chromium is the only one that works so far)

Searching for any related answer brought me to only one single related topic suggesting to install "ffmpeg-libs", which didnt help.

Any help would be appreciated.

Going from nvidia to amd (sh.itjust.works)
submitted 1 year ago by Mandy@sh.itjust.works to c/linux@lemmy.ml

As many already know, nvidia is not the best choice for linux and amd is always recommend when it is brought up, so here id like to ask an equivalent to my graphics card in amd, i know nothing about amd and dont really know where to start honestly.

GPU: gtx 1660 super processor: 11th gen i5-11400 2.60hgz x 6

what would be a similar or better choice from amd in terms of gpu that maybe doesnt cost an arm and a leg? Do nvidia or amd matter in terms of games?

any help would be very appreciated
