Good for them. I still don't want their equipment in our telecom networks but that's not a concern for their domestic usage. If anything, it's probably better for China to use Chinese equipment. Less Chinese money going out of reach into foreign billionaire pockets.

I don't think any wrong doing on their part was ever proven, with countries like Germany state intelligence doing their investigation and finding nothing

It was fear marketing, aka using fear mongering to buy shares for dying western Telecom companies. Seriously, a lot of 5G and 6G patents are made by Chinese people, what chances did slow glaciers like Ericsson have if the USA didn't jump on their old red scare asian peril dick?

Years ago I saw independent analysis of Huawei gear. It was a shit show of vulnerabilities. That on its own was enough for me to conclude that I don't want any of this gear in critical data paths. Having exploitable vulnerabilities is a tactic the NSA has used to enter equipment. Whether Huawei was simply incompetent or they left security holes open on purpose doesn't really matter to me. I'd prefer not to have 'em. Also I'd prefer to have equipment from companies I can take over if needed. 🥹

Your data has been breeched 10 times over already from American companies not giving a shit about securing it.

I don't like the great divide. We get almost no Chinese culture, and it just feels like both nation states are trying to cultivate a West V East narrative for ideological control purposes...

Unless both peoples buy wholeheartedly into nations without borders, this ain't happening. Unfortunately this could only happen sustainably if it happens on the basis of the working classes realizing their commonality and closeness. If it happens on the basis of free trade, the capitalist class will exploit the arbitrage opportunities between the two countries' working classes while turning those classes against each other, so they don't notice they're being co-exploited.

The wonders of banning iPhones

[-] danielfgom@lemmy.world 8 points 5 months ago

No it's not that. Huawei has a very good name in China and new models sell out in minutes.

Thanks to the US ban Huawei hands had to put a lot of work into making their own OS, ecosystem and CPU chips.

And they've managed to pull it off. They have some very clever people working there.

HarmonyOS

Or as I like to call it, "it's not Android bro I swear to God bro legit domestic OS broooo"

[-] filister@lemmy.world 2 points 5 months ago

You do realise that Huawei is a huge company and their smartphone business is a small part of it, right?

[-] AMDIsOurLord@lemmy.ml 2 points 5 months ago

Huawei is the iPhone of China

The same level of garbage as iPhones too, nowadays they have a fully locked ecosystem that's practically hostile to FOSS and they don't seem to care much for GPL

Hell, Huawei was shitty before they got sanctioned, after that they are given free reign

[-] Omniraptor@lemm.ee 1 points 5 months ago

Do you know any good write-ups about the ecosystem?

[-] AMDIsOurLord@lemmy.ml 1 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago)

Huawei? I don't know of any write-ups, but basically

There is a HongMengOS (Harmony OS) that's a microkernel for embedded systems, there is also another OS by the same name that's basically We Have Android At Home™, they have their own app store and their own app SDK that last time I checked, you needed to submit your real life government ID and credentials to be able to download.

Imagine that, you want to develop an app and you need to give your full legal detail to Huawei for review and after you're manually cleared you can be bestowed the permission of downloading the fucking IDE

They also don't provide any device sources and their bootloader is fully locked down, it's completely impossible to use anything other than Huawei shite on their phones
