I have some weird digestion issues, where food doesn't move through me quite as quickly as it should, and I take gummies - wait, wait...nothing.

4 hours later, it hits me like a sack of bricks. It's wild.

Edibles have a huge variance due to how they mix with what's already in your stomach. Empty stomach I barely get high. Full stomach of fatty foods, I get blasted to the moon

[-] misterdoctor@lemmy.world 10 points 11 months ago

Man, I would assume it works the other way? Not arguing. I genuinely donā€™t know shit.

I would have thought so too. Maybe the acid in your stomache can brake down thc in some way? We need to make a big study and i volunteer to partake.

[-] ComradeKhoumrag@infosec.pub 7 points 11 months ago

Also, some people have enzymes that can break down the THC, so some people are wayyy more sensitive to edibles

[-] Nommer@sh.itjust.works 4 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago)

THC binds to fats. If you want the most out them then eat a fast food burger or something right before.

[-] pete_the_cat@lemmy.world 5 points 11 months ago

Yep, I can eat a 100mg edible and feel nothing, 200 mg maybe a little. 300mg I'll probably be passed out.

Once I bought a 1g tincture of "pure" THC (no other cannabinoids or terpenes) and I could take like 300 mg of it and feel a slight high, kinda like a bit of "brain fog" but nothing near like what smoking or doing edibles does to me. It must have something to do with decarboxylating the weed and the "entourage effect".

[-] wildginger@lemmy.myserv.one 4 points 11 months ago

Smoking puts thc directly into your bloodstream via the lungs in a pathway similar to oxygen.

Eating it filters it through your digestive system first, breaking it down and trying to store it in your fat as it slowly deffuses into your body.

That alone makes a huge change in thcs effect on you, by shifting where it hits you and how much at once is capable of hitting you

[-] pete_the_cat@lemmy.world 0 points 11 months ago

But that doesn't explain eating edibles made from weed vs a pure THC tincture, they both go through the digestive system.

[-] wildginger@lemmy.myserv.one 1 points 11 months ago

Solids digest and enter the blood stream at different speeds than liquids do.

[-] i_dont_want_to@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 11 months ago

I hear some people are "immune" to THC edibles. Consuming them with something fatty, like peanut butter, might help. I personally like live rosin edibles. Got all those cannabinoids working together. šŸ‘Œ

[-] ElleChaise@kbin.social 3 points 11 months ago

I am one of those people, unfortunately. I've eaten hundred of MGs of stuff bought at legit sellers from Colorado and California, and nothing works. The only time it ever worked kind of was when they were home made brownies using the cannabutter method using an absolute ton of leftover flower to get it strong enough. I've been told it's an enzyme thing most likely.

[-] pete_the_cat@lemmy.world 0 points 11 months ago

I'm definitely not immune to edibles, I just need a few hundred mgs since I smoke a ton (taking a break for like a month).

[-] hswolf@lemmy.world 5 points 11 months ago

suppose you do edibles 2 times a day, everyday

that would take you 39.000 years to do them 29547436 times

you sir are either a demi-god, a pure blood chihuahua, or you're lying

[-] Ubettawerk@lemmy.blahaj.zone 5 points 11 months ago

You have to find an edible brand with consistent dosage. I used to feel the same way until I found a brand of gummies where I know that if I take two Iā€™ll be at a perfect high!

[-] Album@lemmy.ca 3 points 11 months ago

Like all chemicals you ingest - for max effect take them on an empty stomach and then eat at least a moderately sized meal afterwards.

If you take them on a full stomach then your body needs to process all the food first, and your body will process the edible slowly.

If you take them on an empty stomach and never eat, your body might not metabolize it quickly either.

[-] schmidtster@lemmy.world 1 points 11 months ago

Idk about other chemicals, but THC can be absorbed through the stomach lining and mouth, there it would bypass ā€œprocessingā€.

But it also doesnā€™t need to process all the food first, it would dissipate and essentially be evenly distributed through the food as it gets absorbed and processed.

[-] candyman337@sh.itjust.works 3 points 11 months ago

He said what you said, it will slowly digest the THC, so you don't feel high for a long time until everything is digested. You don't want it to evenly disperse. You want to eat it on an empty stomach, so it will digest all at once. And to get your digestion process actually started, if you have a slow moving digestive system, you would eat a meal right after so that the edible is the first thing digested and quickly

[-] schmidtster@lemmy.world 3 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago)

But none of that actually matters since a large portion would be absorbed straight into the bloodstream.

Full stomach or not, itā€™s about 2 hours for full affect, the vehicle matters, oil or lipoid based for example. Not all chemicals are the same, they are just plain incorrect on every point mate.

[-] candyman337@sh.itjust.works 4 points 11 months ago

Ok did some research.

https://www.eatingwell.com/article/7591435/heres-what-happens-to-your-body-when-you-eat-edibles/#:~:text=Just%20like%20food%20or%20medications,the%20THC%20to%20get%20absorbed.

"Just like food or medications, THC consumed via edibles is absorbed through the walls of your intestines. The more food that's in your systemā€”say, you ate a weed brownie as dessert following a big dinner outā€”the longer it will take for the THC to get absorbed. This is where edibles are majorly different from a joint: When you smoke THC, it immediately goes into your bloodstream, whereas you might not feel the full effect of THC you've consumed until hours later, says Stolbach."

https://organtica.com/how-your-body-processes-edibles/

"Edibles take the longest to be absorbed into your system, but last 8 to 12 hours. This is because the THC travels through your digestive tract to your liver where itā€™s metabolized"

https://herb.co/learn/want-your-edibles-to-kick-in-faster-try-these-3-tips

"Eating an edible right after a meal can slow down the process even further, as your body is already working to digest whatever you just ate.

Similarly, taking an edible on an empty stomach might also help it kick in faster. If the edible is the only thing your body is digesting, it will work quickly to break things down and send nutrients, or in this case, THC, your way."

"Whether youā€™re on an empty stomach or just finished a meal, a warm drink or chicken broth can help ease digestion.

This tip isnā€™t so much of a fact but rather a tried and true method that many stoners include in their edible routine.

The theory states that eating an edible and sipping on something warm may help the stomach break down your edible quicker by speeding up digestion."

So yes you're right they go to the bloodstream, and it's not a sequential process of digestion, but eating a lot before eating an edible will slow your digestion. And just like other pills or drugs, it will take longer to digest if you've had a lot to eat beforehand.

The comment you initially replied to was right that eating food slows down the effects kicking in, just not right about the why.

And they partially correct about eating after taking one. They were saying that it can help speed up digestion because it will get your stomach acid more active. Which is true if you eat certain things after or just before an edible

[-] schmidtster@lemmy.world 2 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago)

All Iā€™m gonna say, is none of those seem to touch on sublingually nor the different bioavailability of different extraction ingredients, and thereā€™s not a whole lot of actual research since itā€™s status as an illegal drug in most places.

Itā€™s not going to be just through the intestines, it has to pass through the stomach and mouth first where some would be directly absorbed.

I quickly looked through this, but canā€™t speak of its totality right now. linky

[-] candyman337@sh.itjust.works 1 points 11 months ago

Yes but even in the article you linked it states that small amounts may be absorbed. You are not going to get the majority of the dose of your edible though your mouth or stomach, the majority is absorbed in the intestines. Which is also stated in the page you linked.

It also states that sublingual and oromucosal absorption happens within seconds to minutes. If you had absorbed a significant amount of THC from chewing an edible, you would feel it quickly, and that just doesn't happen.

The fact of how edibles function in the real world, aside from negligible absorption in the mouth is this:

  • you are not going to feel your edible kick in until 30 minutes to 2 hours later

  • an edible kicking in can be slowed if you've had a large meal

  • drinking something warm or having a small amount of food just before or after taking an edible will speed up its digestion and speed up it kicking in.

  • it does NOT absorb at the same rate no matter what.

[-] candyman337@sh.itjust.works 0 points 11 months ago

How would it be absorbed straight through the bloodstream from an edible?

Not an argument question, just a curious one from a place of ignorance. I always thought the edible had to be digested first, and if it was eaten after food that would slow the digestion of the edible.

[-] EatYouWell@lemmy.world 4 points 11 months ago

They said it's absorbed by the stomach lining so it doesn't have to be digested.

It's the same concept as 10% of the alcohol you drink being absorbed by your mouth.

[-] candyman337@sh.itjust.works 1 points 11 months ago

I didn't know that about alcohol either lol

[-] schmidtster@lemmy.world 2 points 11 months ago

Through the stomach lining and a little in the mouth. Not all chemicals are able to cross this barrier which is why the original commenter is straight up wrong.

If you take the edible on a time delay capsule so it bypasses stomach absorption yeah. Different methods have different bioavailability, whether itā€™s straight decarbed cannabis, suspended in oil, or milk fats. All 3 off those options can be made into brownies or taken as is.

[-] flicker@kbin.social 0 points 11 months ago

The person above you seems to be trying to argue for the efficacy of an oil-based thc tincture, which is absorbed sublingually through the mucous membrane beneath the tongue. Because otherwise I guess they're suggesting that the "edible" be consuming pure thc/oil compound, which would be weed oil or weed butter, and no one should be drinking those.

[-] schmidtster@lemmy.world 1 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago)

The bioavailability of THC depends on the method and vehicle of consumption. Wheter itā€™s straight decarbed cannabis, suspended in oil, or milk fat. Would all produce different affects when put into the same brownie recipe.

There is some methods that are better for sublingually dosing than others, but this was about edibles, which still also get absorbed through the mouth and stomach linings.

Not all chemicals are able to be absorbed this way either, soā€¦

[-] flicker@kbin.social 0 points 11 months ago

Bruh I know all this, as should've been indicated by my reply. You're giving off the vibe of someone who wants to fell other people stuff just to seem smart, and not like somebody having a conversion.

[-] schmidtster@lemmy.world 2 points 11 months ago

Your reply with assumptions that arenā€™t even correct themselves?

Yeah people ā€œdrinkā€ oil, youā€™ve never heard of someone melting butter in tea or even fire crackers?

Iā€™m open for a conversation, but sometimes you gotta correct people, lmfao.

[-] variants@possumpat.io 2 points 11 months ago

I preferred the seltzer waters like lagunitas hi-fi

[-] CluckN@lemmy.world 3 points 11 months ago

I tried an infused seltzer after a 2 month t-break and was sober enough to pilot a submarine.

[-] variants@possumpat.io 1 points 11 months ago

haha its like beer, add some lime and drink a few
