Apps for kbin? (kbin.social)

Iโ€™ve been very happy using kbin so far. But it seems like thereโ€™s a lot of app development for lemmy happening. Is there any chance of apps coming to kbin or support for kbin through some of the lemmy apps?

@skellener

The main problem is that unlike lenny ... kbin does not (yet) have an API ... expect the floodgates to open when that is done (it's being worked on right now)

Thanks! That's great news! ๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ‘

Hariette posted that she thinks #ArtemisApp will be publicly available within a week:

...but with the caveat that right now it will only work for users subscribed to her kbin instance (this is because she has enabled an API which has been in development, and is now undergoing review).

There are others in development too, but full release of the API and roll out of this to kbin.social is key first.

Oh, thatโ€™s exciting! Iโ€™ve been waiting for this. I loved Apollo for Reddit and Iโ€™ve read that itโ€™s very similar. I canโ€™t wait to try it.

Once the kbin API is complete and publically available, most of the Lemmy apps I've looked at are intending to add support.

I know this is not the thread for this, but I just donโ€™t understand why we need two separate apps sitting on top of the of the fediverse that to my eyes do exactly the same thing. ๏ฟผ

Can you clarify? As of my knowledge kbin doesn't have an app yet and lemmy apps don't support kbin.

I believe he's referring to kbin as an app that competes with the lemmy app itself. It's a bit off, but not entirely. The problem is that kbin introduces things that are not entirely lemmy compatible. So it feels like a new app, meaning it feels like a fragmented ecosystem. It's not entirely wrong, and it does make for a poor user experience when it comes to onboarding, but overall the thats largely the intent of the fediverse: provide options. You should be free to create your own version, however compatible you choose to make it, and add whatever features you want. Users are free to use it or not. No one can disable all functionality such as reddit shutting down all third party apps. This is by design and why you'll see many great apps pop-up. Kbin being one of those options.

Ah so the mastodon situation. With mastodon not having features essentially which basically a lot of other alternatives have or even having their own exclusives features.
