I don't see any issues here, she should be able to be towed out to sea and dive successfully.

Load her up with a full array of weapons and send her on her way.

If she loves Russia, she will come back.

Can you find Russian guys that would still try it for a cheque? Yeah probably.

will be waterproof enough to serve briefly as a boat

That's a $300,000,000 sub... well, it was.

It still is, it even has increased quick diving capabilities.

[-] Blastasaurus@lemm.ee 4 points 1 year ago

I am surprised a sub only costs $300MM.

[-] awwwyissss@lemm.ee 4 points 1 year ago

Probably because it was released about 50 years ago.

[-] Fosheze@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

It's an ancient diesel electric sub. It's about as close to a budget military sub as you can get.

[-] JoMiran@lemmy.ml 17 points 1 year ago

If only there had been a way to avoid this situation.

Why is a good part of the image blurred?

[-] FaceDeer@kbin.social 17 points 1 year ago

Perhaps the guy who took it is concerned that if people can see exactly who was present at that moment they might be able to work out who he was.

[-] plzExplainNdetail@slrpnk.net 13 points 1 year ago

Likely to not give away any extra information about what they have there.

[-] ik5pvx@lemmy.world 5 points 1 year ago

Gotta slap a top secret sticker on all that rust

[-] bradorsomething@ttrpg.network 4 points 1 year ago

Naked women are drawn to submarines like a magnet. The ship is probably crawling with them right now.

[-] loops@beehaw.org 1 points 1 year ago

Yes, it must be the dreaded nipple.

To leave something to the imagination.

Does anyone have a list of how many Russian ships have been taken out of combat? It seems Ukraine is winning the Naval war and they barely have a Navy.

[-] echodot@feddit.uk 8 points 1 year ago

They do have a navy it's just a cheap and exploding navy.

Meanwhile the Russians have an expensive and explodable navy.

[-] Rapidcreek@reddthat.com 12 points 1 year ago

I'm sure there's a joke about not having a navy but sinking submarines, but I'll let Zelensky tell it.

[-] flying_monkies@kbin.social 9 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Slap some flex tape on it and call it good

[-] SuddenlyBlowGreen@lemmy.world 9 points 1 year ago

Goddamn lit cigarettes again!

[-] Fapper_McFapper@lemmy.world 8 points 1 year ago

Significant or catastrophic?

[-] IphtashuFitz@lemmy.world 15 points 1 year ago

Damage like that would probably cost as much to properly repair as it would take to build a new sub.

I’m not a submersible expert by any stretch, but given the visible damage it’s a safe bet the pressure hull has been damaged and possibly punctured. In US subs the pressure hull is cast as a single piece, but I believe Russian ones are two pieces welded together. Whatever the case, damage to the pressure hull is far from trivial to repair. Any repairs to it that aren’t a complete replacement will likely result in a significantly weaker hull, meaning it could no longer safely dive as deep as it used to.

And replacing it would mean almost complete disassembly. Probably safer and more cost effective to build a completely new sub and cannibalize any parts from this one that makes sense.

[-] Valmond@lemmy.mindoki.com 4 points 1 year ago

Yeah thats shit is wrecked!

Hulls are complex, all that tension and heat damage, can't undo it.

Slap a lil carbon fiber over that bitch and it'll be good as new .

[-] BombOmOm@lemmy.world 13 points 1 year ago

Well, she can dive just fine. Let's call her 50% good.

[-] khannie@lemmy.world 7 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

The consensus from what I've read / watched is that it's dead.

Nice knowledgeable English lad I'm subscribed to posted this earlier....

Isn't he?! Just came across his channel about a week ago. Instant subscribe. He really seems to know his stuff too.

That pixelated joke in the linked video was peak British wit too.

[-] DarkThoughts@kbin.social 8 points 1 year ago

Was waiting for some pictures like this. That looks pretty damning.

[-] AdrenochromeBandit@partizle.com 7 points 1 year ago

Better move that fleet farther away lmao

[-] echodot@feddit.uk 6 points 1 year ago

Move it inland, that'll fool them.
