on one hand, it’s been over half a year and the only confirmation was a tweet from auttomatics CEO; but their other brand wordpress *did* just implement activitypub through a plug-in… thoughts?

Currently I'm more aware of general interest instances for both Lemmy & Kbin, and a few more focused ones (e.g. Mander.xyz/slrpnk.net/startrek.website), so I'm curious what others there might be.

At the same time, would you be interested in more narrowly focused instances that aren't tech-oriented, and if so, concerning what subjects?

Also as to why you might want those, it's mainly for a more focused local feed related to communities surrounding the primary subject you joined for, meanwhile your subscribed/all feeds would remain more general. An example might be you join a country/region-oriented instance where the local communities may literally be based around local communities in your area as well as regional/national & sub-regional/national news or the like.

No idea if lemmy.ca is organized like that in any way btw, but I wouldn't be surprised if there are some Canadian-themed local communities there. Anyway, I'm getting sidetracked, but see first couple sentences for the main question & topic.

@fediverse how do you defederate instances on akkoma?

i just set up this akkoma instance (that im posting from right now c: ) and before i move all my stuff over i want to add this list of domains to block https://writer.oliphant.social/oliphant/the-oliphant-social-blocklist i just dont get how to do it, does anyone know?

As we all know there's surge of LLM-powered comments, ranged from chatgpt-esque style to downright rude comments infesting reddit. It makes the place from unpleasant to extraunpleasant place. The problem I'm worried the most is if they're starting to invade lemmy and friends. Any development to combat this? Like maybe akin to botdefense.

Since lemmy.world is having trouble for the second time in three days, I decided to switch back over to my lemmy.ml account. Unfortunately I don't have all of my communities back over here in my .ml account, and it took me over an hour to manually subscribe to the ones I had over on my .world account.

It would be great if there was a way that we could export our community list from one instance and import it to another. It would make it much easier to change communities if the need arises.

Edit 3: Hmm... Interesting... The original post was taken down instead of admins making a response. I mean, if I were an admin with nothing to hide, I'd just simply say "I did not have a secret meeting with anyone representing Meta/Facebook" then maybe lock the thread if stuff gets too out of hand. Deleting a post is not the right thing to do, and even if you are innocent, now you just made yourself look bad.

I do not agree with your decision, but I respect the fact that you left this post up. Alright, so that's the end of this, hopefully the next time someone make accusations, they provide evidence. Also, if you are making a legitimate accusation, make sure to crosspost to different instances to make takedowns more difficult. So to conclude this, I want to state these facts:

1. The Original OP did not seem to have provided any evidence.

2. The Original Post was removed and the Original OP was banned from the community which the post was in.

3. None of the admins of lemmy.world made a statement in response to the accusations.

Fosstodon admins were at least transparent and shared with their community when they were approached by meta for an off the record meeting, which was awesome. They also declined that meeting and shared screenshots of them doing so.

But lemmy.world admins won't tell you that at least one of them accepted that same meeting request. Why won't they say that?

Tell your community that you accepted a meeting with meta. Thats not wrong in and of itself, but I feel it is shady/not right when you're communicating about a wait-and-see approach, while having meetings with the company in question yet not being transparent about it.

Also, I'm spinning up my own instance because I don't trust this platform to folks who aren't transparent. Don't ask me to join, it's going to be just for me for now. I don't even know that I have time to admin an instance, but my trust is wearing thin based on the facts at hand. So, it's what I'm doing.

I feel like in a lot of ways, app.net was ahead of it's time. It's whole goal was to build a "social backbone". A social account and network of linked users. On top of that backbone you could build out services, and all your friends were already there. In a lot of ways, it did what the fediverse is trying to do with Kbin, Lemmy, Mastodon, Pixelfed and activitypub in general.

I remember they started with a Twitter clone, but a clone for Vine, and Instagram soon appeared. It was wonderful while it existed.

Let's say for example that I want to share this post https://mas.to/@NunavutBirder/110584158893944201 to !canada@lemmy.ca .

I can of course just create a post with the URL from my lemmy account. But is there a more ...fediverse-ish way of doing it?

I know for example, that in Mastodon, I can make a post and mention @canada@lemmy.ca and that will create a post in !canada@lemmy.ca.

But I guess what I'm saying is that I want to somehow "boost" an existing mastodon post to lemmy. Does that make sense? Is it possible?

I believe that the Fediverse can and should be more than a niche thing for those that reject Big Tech.

I also believe that to get there we will need businesses, service providers and professional developers who work on it because they are motivated by more than just "community values" and goodwill. For example, I have quite a bit experience with distributed systems and I know I could work to make Lemmy federation more efficient, but I can only do that if I can secure a stable income.

Please follow the linked Mastodon thread and vote on the polls. The idea is to find out if there are enough people willing to pay for services that can ease their pains with Mastodon/Lemmy/Matrix.

Old habits die hard, but there's Reddiquette which needs to be revived, and some which needs to die.

Many "golden-age" redditors remember a time when downvoting was reserved for hostility, not a different opinion. For the sake of our growing community I would like to implore everyone to be awesome to each other.

However, this place is not Reddit.

• We don't measure in bananas here.
• We don't need to append "edit: typo" to edited posts and comments.
• if you see something which is worthy of a downvote: down vote and move on! Don't engage with it and feed the algorithm/engament machine so other people are exposed to it when sorting by active.

Two posts, two different instances, two different sets of comments. Ok, there are pros and cons:

Segmenting the conversation means that different opinions and perspectives have a bigger opportunity to rise to the top in each discussion. That’s good.

There is also a risk of too few different viewpoints being present in one instance or another, making the possibility of an echo chamber forming higher. That’s bad.

I’m not suggesting that there’s a single perfect way to handle it, nothing is that black and white, but maybe there is a chance to do better. Perhaps crossposted content could contain a second link underneath between the body of the post and the comments section that could inform users that an identical post existed on another instance. Perhaps the comment sections could be merged but the user could choose to filter by instance if they wanted to.

We have bookwyrm.social, which does an excellent job at replacing the need for goodreads (which is owned by Amazon). But is there an alternative to imdb.com?

With the vlemmy situation ongoing, i feel like it would be useful to put this here (i did not make either of these tools)

Lemmy Account Settings Instance Migrator (LASIM) copies all your subscribed communities and blocks and lets you upload them to another account, in just a few clicks

lemmy-migrate does the same thing but without a GUI and support for uploading your backup to multiple accounts at once

The best part of the fediverse is that anyone can run their own server. The downside of this is that anyone can easily create hordes of fake accounts, as I will now demonstrate.

Fighting fake accounts is hard and most implementations do not currently have an effective way of filtering out fake accounts. I'm sure that the developers will step in if this becomes a bigger problem. Until then, remember that votes are just a number.

I think they are leaving out something quite important in this blog post - nobody is using their real names here.

Can someone help me with how peertube P2P works? I can understand how ActivityPub is used for all the "social" parts but I'm a bit confused about the actual video player.

Redundancy:
I have my own instance and I made a redundancy of a video from the blender instance. if I watch the video on my instance I see 2 peers, my instance and the blender one. I can seen both in Firefox dev tools.
If I watch the same video on the blender instance I see 7 peers, the blender instance, mine, and others. why are these extra peers not showing on my instance? do I need to do something? If I watch the video on one of these other instances mine does show up in the their peers list.

I also made a video from framatube redundant but my instance doesn't appear as a peer on framatube.

Client P2P:
If I watch a video does my browser share It over P2P? if so what is the point of this? it seems to lose the video as soon as I leave the page so this functionality seems a bit useless to me.

BitTorrent:
If I download a video I get the option of a BitTorrent torrent. If I seed this torrent can it be leeched by web clients? I tried and It doesn't show up in the peer list. What's the point of running a full BitTorrent tracker if it doesn't work with the main P2P system?

EDIT: BitTorrent is incompatible with webtorrent that peertube uses. Peertube also uses HLS instead of webtorrent and behaves a bit different (you can't seed it with a webtorrent client).

Peer discovery:
As I said in 1 and 2 how does the player actually find peers? Is there something like DHT or a tracker built in to peertube? if it's an internal tracker how does the tracker find peers?

EDIT: It uses a tracker build in to peertube.
