This feels less uplifting and more depressing that it ever got to this place to begin with...

There is a special place in hell for the people who made up this law, and the people enforcing it.

I mean... what rational jury would vote to convict?

[-] Vaggumon@lemmy.world 11 points 1 year ago

I was going to say all white republican, but you said rational so never mind.

Lol all it takes is 1 rational person to hang the jury. I mean what are the odds that the second jury will be all irrational people? They can't just keep trying the same case forever, eventually a judge will dismiss it. Or most likely, a new jury will have majority of rational people that will likely convince the rest to just acquit. Like who wants to sit there any longer than they have to? It's not like they're releasing a murder suspect.

Jury nullification is something that more people need to use. If you don't agree with the law, as a juror you can always vote not guilty.

Though if you talk about jury nullification they will not select you for jury duty.

That is why we have to talk about it out here, where they have no say in our speech..

What's jury nullification? I don't remember ever hearing that word. Anyways I'm voting non-guilty because I have a reasonable doubt. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Once you are on the jury it is your prerogative nay, your RESPONSIBILITY to use it when it is appropriate.

A law criminalizing feeding the homeless is a perfect example of why jury nullification exists.

Sorry, what I meant was that I would convieniently not remember this when I get asked about it during jury selection, then I might convieniently decide to vote non-guilty because I had a reasonable doubt. Totally not because I learned of jury nullification. Totally...

Also it's not contempt of court since I "forgot" about it during jury selection. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Wild they have enough officers to monitor each unhoused person to ensure they can ticket every time this happens.
