TIL that the trend of anime's signature large eyes started from mangaka Osamu Tezuka's works, who himself was influenced by Disney and Betty Boop cartoons, and fashion designer Jun'ichi Nakahara's works. Other factor such as a proverb involving eyes also played a part.

I am just soooo tired of that art style. I know not all anime is like that but goddamn, there's so much unoriginal design

Preach! This and that little cartoon versions of characters when they are expressing any emotion put me off of so many otherwise good animes.

He was incredibly prolific but I have heard of very little of anything he had ever done.

Although I do note that there are some similarities between some of his work and some of dragon Ball and dragon Ball z, and I do not know if this is because they are drawing from similar sources in Japanese mythology or what.

Here's a list of his work: https://tezukaosamu.net/en/manga/?c=90

It's pretty common not to have heard of his works, Astro Boy is the only one that made it over to the West but it's never gotten a ton of attention. I remember the 2003 series got some play on Saturday mornings and Toonami but it was really short-lived.

Pluto which came out on Netflix late last year is a reinterpretation of an Astro boy arc that's done fairly well.

MAPPA also made a great anime adaptation of Dororo a few years ago but it mostly flew under the radar.

I used to watch Astroboy in the 80s on TV in Canada lol. It had to be one of the earliest shows that talked about rights for artificial intelligence.

IMO proportional body plans are overrated.

Mother's Basement made a pretty good point when he pointed out in the Allmight vs AfO vid that letting the artists go buck wild with body proportions can achieve some spectacularly expressive results.

Also spectacularly disgusting results.

Yo, to any humans who come across this Tezuka did a crazy amount of work and he was a pretty prolific Manga artist. As you can see here. I'm mixed, and I grew up reading a lot of manga. As I got older, it became less prevalent in my life. But reading a Tezuka is one of my dirty pleasures. I say dirty, because he was for sure of the time. But he makes really wild stories that run you all over the place. I never read any of his historical stuff (He was for sure really popular for both his Hitler and Buddha stuff and I never really cared for either...? Eh.) But I read a lot of his crime stuff and fantastical stuff and hot damn are both fun.

Metropolis is one of my bro's favorite movies and I am constantly having a think on The Book of Human Insects.
